    Hey,

I have been problems with the nvidia video chipset for the last week.

I have gone in safe mode, deleted the video drivers, reinstalled them several times. I have installed a different video card that works well from ATI and it won't let me configure it either.

I have gone to the extent of trying a new mainboard and I am still having the same problem.

When I am in normal mode, the display properties show no tabs to let you change the setting on the video card.

I am currently running a new install of WinXP PRO.

    Thanks in advance,

    Will

    Hi,

In Safe Mode, go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall the graphics listings there.
[Check for the ATI software and any possible "previous" graphics software as well].

When you reboot into normal mode and the wizard asks for where to find the drivers, you can direct it to the drivers CD, otherwise click Cancel and run the drivers installation program when you get to the desktop. If you have problems, reboot to the Start Options menu (F8) and select VGA Mode. Run the drivers installation when you get to the desktop.

    Thanks Mattman,

But that didn't help, I tried it both ways. I initially thought it was an hardware problem and changed the video card, that didn't make a difference so I changed the mainboard and I am still getting the same video card error.

Sounds like a registry problem .....

Go here, line 285 right - Restore all display tabs.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Double click on Restore all display tabs to download a reg file. Double click on the reg file to merge with the registry.

    Thanks PeteC,

But that didn't work. After I tried the reg file, I went into safe mode and removed the video drivers and and tried to reinstall them and it still hasn't corrected the problem.

Have you installed/updated/re-installed the motherboard chipset drivers?

Check through your installed programs (Add/Remove Programs) for any that may influence the graphics indirectly. Something that comes to mind is a program and drivers for a TV card.

If you do happen to have, say, a TV card, disconnect it during the installation of Windows, then follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation after all the major drivers are installed.

I have had resource clashes between the graphics and things like the onboard network adapter or audio. You may want to try going into the BIOS/Startup settings and disabling whatever onboard hardware you can as a test. (I used a PCI network adapter and audio card to make up for the disabled onboard hardware. This works fine for me, otherwise I would consider doing a BIOS upgrade).

This install of Windows XP PRO is a relatively new install. I don't have a TV tuner installed on this computer.

I disabled the network adapter and audio and that did not make a difference.

I did a BIOS upgrade and uninstalled the video drivers. When I logged into windows, before I reinstalled the video drivers, I went video properties and you still can not see any tabs to change the settings. You can see them in safe mode.

Maybe we have read too much into this.

The nVidia software may be why you don't see the tabs.

Right-click on the desktop, look for an nVidia listing like "nVidia Control Panel ". That is where you will need to make adjustments to the display settings.

Is your graphics card set as the primary in the Bios? AGP, PCI or etc.? Does the motherboard have onboard graphics and if so did you disable it?

I checked the graphics card in the BIOS, everything is in order.

So, I thought I would rule out the onboard video all together. I went into safe mode, uninstalled the nvidia video card drivers and put the ATI video card in.

Installed the latest ATI drivers and rebooted. Windows logged in the same way with a '!' by the video card and no tabs in the video properties.

    Thanks for your help.
