I'm using an old workhorse of a printer, a HP LJIII. It produces beautiful halftones when driven by a W98 computer but the XP drivers for the same unit look like hell. Can some supply or explain how to extract the driver from the 98 install CD to allow me to load it in XP as a new driver? HP's web site offers nothing.

I don't believe the 98 drivers will work on NT operating systems.

HP don't offer drivers for that model because they are included in Win XP. I ran the printer wizard and could see drivers for the LJIII, LJIIID, LJIIIP and LJIIISi, so you may want to double-check the model. There were also variations for cartridges and fonts (I did not look closely).

I installed a LJ6 recently which went "automatically" and runs well.

I was asked to work on a LJ4 that had been working fine on a two computer network, but the drivers got corrupted. The only way I could get around it was to install the printer on the other computer, then it worked fine again. I could not get into Safe Mode, but I would have uninstalled it there. Try going to the Printers folder in Safe Mode, right-clicking on the printer and selecting Delete.

Check there are no listings in Add/Remove Programs for previous printers.

I think you will find that if the drivers are the correct ones and not corrupted, it should work well (you could try running it on another Win XP computer if you would like to cross-check).
