I recently bought a dvd/rw sata burner for my computer which has an ide cd/rw burner. The install went fine it recognized the new dvd burner and installed it with out any trouble! it even burned a few dvd (great ). Now this is where the trouble starts, as soon as I went to back up a file to the ide cd/rw burner the computer restarted (new it went to easy to be true)! So I went into device manager to see if I had any conflicts in there (nope all looks fine) If I disable the dvd burner in device manager and go to back up the file on the cd.rw all works fine! Since this is the first Sata device I have ever installed I am at a loss where to start looking for a reason why this happens! The Ide cd/rw is set to master in the ide channel and the Sata dvd burner is also recognizes as master in the sata channel any idea's would be greatly appreciated

My first question would be if you installed burning software for the new drive while there was burning software for the old drive still installed? If so, I would go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the new software, then uninstall the old software, then reinstall the new software. The new burning software should control both drives.

As some tests, you may want to try setting the CD-RW as slave or just disconnect it and see if the system becomes stable.

You system is overclocked? You won't be able to troubleshoot with the system overclocked.

Could the added drive be overloading the power supply?

    thx for the reply
No I didn't install any new software unless you consider adding lightscribe software for the dvd burner, have had nero 6 for sometime
Yep its over clocked but just a little 2.8 stock 3.0 overclocked ( very stable )
Never thought about the power supply being to small! but I am not using both drives at the same time! I will watch the volatge and see what happens when I try to backup something to my cd/rw drive and see if it drops thx for the reply
PS the system in my sig is not the system thats giving me the trouble

Well I think I got the trouble all fixed ! what I ended up doing as my last resort was setting the Cd/Rw drive to slave! Thx ( mattman) for the suggestion! and so far it has worked for the last 2 hrs. What I don't understand is why did I have to set it to slave when its the only thing on the IDE cable? the Dvd is on the sata port. I thought that going to sata would give me more space where as if i wanted to put in 3 cd/dvd I could. But it seems that since the cd/rw had to be put on as a slave then I guess I can't put another burner on the Ide cable. Not that I wanted to but, may be sometime down the road thx again sorry I took so long getting back on this

Hope it is working now :)

CD-RW working as slave? I have seen quite a few that "like" the slave setting. My theory...when CD-ROM drives came out they were universally connected as master on the secondary IDE. When CD-RW drives came out they were universally connected as slave to the CD-ROM drives. I have found many drives "like" it that way. You might want to check if there is a firmware update for the drive, but this may still not rectify the situation (major adjustments in writing firmware is costly).

The computer's BIOS might need to juggle resources (unsuccessfully?) depending on the drive's configuration.

The motherboard only has one IDE controller? I think the motherboard manufacturer would prefer to not have any at all.

Those are the ways I might see them.

Well I spoke to soon ! this morning when I went to back up my files to the cd/rw it re booted UGH! looks like I will have to find another solution. Let me ask you this I am not to sure that I ever installed the sata drivers from the motherboard install disk, If i didn't would it find the sata dvd drive or where would I go to see if I installed them
I just turned off automatic re start and got a bsod and on it it said Multiple_IRP_complete_requests and then is said disable bios mem options such as caching or shadowing Humm i went into the bios and couldn't find anything for mem caching or shadowing
