I own a laptop with XP Pro installed. The laptop was purchased with XP Pro pre-installed and do not have the XP install disk. I downloaded Explorer 7 and hated it. I then went to add/remove programs and uninstalled it. Since that time I constantly receive error messages when I click on a website saying, "Explorer has encountered a problem and must close ". I then have three options, debug, send error report, and don't send. After selecting any of them I am brought back to my desktop and have to start all over again. I never had this problem before downloading Explorer 7. There appears to be a conflict with Explorer 6 and 7. What I would like to do is a repair of Explorer 6 or a complete reinstall of Explorer 6. Before doing this I would like to remove all remnants of Explorer 7 from the laptop first. Please bear in mind I do not have the XP install disk. I can assure you the laptop is virus free and all junk files have been removed. I even ran CHKDSK with zero results.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

    Two suggestions ....

First download Windows Installer Cleanup Facility and remove any references to IE 7 - if present. If none are present ....

Reinstall IE 7, reboot and then remove through Add/Remove programs to roll back to IE 6.

Third possibility re-install IE 6 using the ie.inf method ....

    1. Download Windows Installer Cleanup Facility. No reference to IE7 was found.

    2. Reinstalled IE 7, rebooted and removed through Add/Remove programs to roll back to IE 6. Same problem after roll back.

    3. Re-installing IE 6 using the ie.inf method does not work. Dialog box appears asking for the XP install disk which I do not have as stated earlier.

I am a little surprised that you were asked for the XP CD which I had noted you do not have access to - the files should be on the hard drive.

Anyway I suggest you try re-registering IE - must have SP 2 for the following ....

    Open a command window - Start > Run > cmd > Enter

Change to the C:\ drive - type cd\ > Enter

    At the C prompt type in ...... "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" /rereg > Enter

When the process has finished close the Command Window.

I came across a hit on Google which suggested that the MS method (above) was buggy and offered this solution ....

Not having had occasion to ues either of the above they are posted 'as seen'.

When I submitted this thread I thought it might be a relatively easy problem to fix. The problem is I am on a four month trip with access to only this one computer. If something should seriously go wrong with my Internet Explorer I would be dead. What I am going to do is reinstall IE7 for the remainder of my trip. Once I get back home I will submit a new thread. Sorry to put you to so much trouble. Let's close this thread for the time being. Thanks for your help.

I noticed you are from Staffordshire, UK. I am from Stafford Springs, Connecticut. I wonder if my hometown was named after Staffordshire. It's time to do a little research with the town records when I get back home. God bless the motherland.

Absolutely no trouble - we are here to solve problems :)

If you have access to an XP CD when you return there are further options - have a good trip.
Quite possible, in fact more than likely as you are in New England :) - Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire - 10 miles or so north of where I live. I see that Manchester and Enfield - both UK towns are also close by to Stafford Springs.

You are indeed correct. The town was first settled in 1719. A number of families still reside here whose ancestors arrived on the Mayflower. The town of Stafford is part of Tolland County. These are the towns within the county:

    Andover | Bolton | Columbia | Coventry | Ellington | Hebron | Mansfield | Somers | Stafford | Tolland | Union | Vernon | Willington

    Recognize any names?

You could install Fire Fox. It is FREE. Then if you did have a problem with IE, you can still get on the internet.
    http://www.mozilla-browser.com/firefox-download.htm

When installing it, watch each window and make sure you take the check out of Google Toolbar unless you want it. It works very much like IE.

    Sure do ....

Andover - Bolton - Coventry - Ellington - Hebron x2 - Mansfield - Stafford - Tolland - Willington x5 are all the names of English (or Welsh) towns and villages which exist today.

MrBill - I'll save the web site and give it a shot after I get back home.

PeteC - I just thought of something that's rather amusing. After being honorably discharged from the US Army I attended and graduated from Central Connecticut State University located in New Britain, Connecticut.
