According to the Compaq web site, both the SR5249ES Desktop PC and the SR5249UK Desktop PC came preinstalled with Vista. Compaq does not have XP drivers for it available.

That means you'll have to find out the make and model number of every component...motherboard, sound card, video card, network card and anything else it may have...then search the web site of each manufacturer to see if XP drivers are available.

Don't be surprised if you can't find XP drivers. Compaq uses a lot of proprietary stuff. Another reason is that hardware manufacturers are not necessarily releasing XP drivers for new hardware they know will be used on systems with Vista preinstalled.

Do you know where I could look to find a list of the components?

By the way, if I can't find the drivers, does that mean I can't install XP on my PC?

    Been there, done that

I recently changed a Presario 5152 from Vista to WinXP and after a lot of searching, I found the following link. You may not be as lucky but you certainly can get a good idea of what you need--besides these 5xxx Compaqs do not really change a lot from model to mode and most of the drivers, except maybe the MB, will probably work.

    Good luck

Please don't post URL's as code - they are not clickable :)

I have removed the code tags - the BBS software truncates the visible address, but the full address is underlying.

Sorry about that; habits die hard and putting code tags around live links has been pretty well been the norm for me for years. I'll do better.

You should be able to get the make and model number of most, if not all, the components by downloading and running Everest Home Edition.

If that can't identify them all, try Unknown Device Identifier. I don't know if this one will work on Vista but give it a shot.

Keep in mind that installing XP on a system that came with Vista preinstalled may void the warranty.

Everest is getting a bit long in the tooth now - discontinued in Home freeware version for several years now, but still useful at times.

Current favourite for many is SIW Diagnostics - freeware for home use.
