Hi all. First time posting. Have read the helpful advice. From reading over other posts I'll try to be concise here. If you know of other posts for me to look at, please let me know. I need help with my system randomly rebooting.

I've had a peculiar problem occuring with my XP Home Edition SP2 running on a Compaq Intel Celeron D 340 (at 2.93GHz).
The system has been randomly rebooting itself about once a day for the past couple of days. I have disabled automatic reboot, so that a blue screen displays. The last blue screen read -
STOP: 0X0000008E (and a bunch of associated numbers)
(My BIOS is Phoenix 3.03 dated 8/31/04. If it needs updating, I need a web page to download.)
After rebooting, a svchost.exe errors comes up and refers to an Application Error instructions at 0x5b9ff53c referenced memory at 0x0000119.

The last install I did on the system was to add 2 gigs of memory (which I suspect may be the problem) about a month ago. It was 2 sticks of DDR-333 PC2700. Have not tryed putting in my old 512 mb sticks yet to see if the problem stops.

From running PC-Doctor, I did a Motherboard test and all passed except the memory. It gave a Memory Pattern Test failure with reference to ME516-1W.
It gives no indication of what this is and I have found nothing on the Internet that tells me either......

From running Everest, here are my specs on temp. and voltage (I'm not an expert on what these should be for a healthy system, so input would be appreciated):

    =====================================================
I read about the Windows automatic update causing problems sometimes. I have disabled, but have not rebooted the system yet for it to take effect, as the system is the one I'm on posting this.

My computer fan usually revs up often, as I run alot of software (browser windows, imaging, design). It's rather quiet at the moment, and I only have IE open.
My electricity may be fluctuating? I do know that the curcuit that the system is on has alot of other things on it. I have no option but to use the system where it is for now though. It could be also that it needs a better fan or power supply. I don't know enough about checking the electricity and reading the above Everest hardware specs to determine.

While I'm posting, what are the best softwares for diagnosing hardware/operating system problems which also gauges the health of a system and notifies you when something is askew? Is there such a software? The ones that I have seen are geared towards spitting out debug info. or specs that are hard to decipher.

Is this an Emachine or other proprietary PC? The power supply is not within specification. If you are having a problem with the voltage at the wall outlet you need to get that addressed.

Up till now have not had a problem with my system. Do know that the system shares same curcuit with other devices in an older house. Not sure what to do about that other than to call an electrician. The reboot problem has only recently started occuring, which as I mentioned was sometime after the memory was added.

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.
    Arguments:

If this problem started after installing new memory, I would suggest removing and installing old memory. If that cures the problem you could try further test. You have suspicions of old wiring / questionable power quality. The new memory may be more sensitive to power fluctuations / failure. With new memory installed, move computer to a home with known stable power. Possible another solution would be to install a good quality UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). Depending on the quality of the UPS, this may correct the problem.
