    Hello All,

I have a problem which I cannot seem to resolve without having to re-install Windows (will lose 2 years of data etc.) so i am hoping someone may have a solution:

I am Running XP media edition and downloaded a driver update from Intel (motherboard chipset), after re-boot neither my keyboard or mouse work. I only have USB input.

My keyboard and mouse works until windows starts to boot then nothing. Both are wireless and i notice that the power to the wireless controller also switches off when windows kicks in.

I have tried other keyboards and mice but it is the usb ports that do not seem to work.

Is there any way of restoring my old chipset driver without loading windows or any other thing i can do.

    HELP please!

alfinator - Welcome to the Board :)

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? - may require PS/2 mouse/keyboard. You should then be able to remove the chipset drivers through Add/Remove Programs and reinstall the originals.
    PS/2??

Are you sure that the drivers you updated were compatible with your chipset?

If you can get into Safe Mode you can checkout the USB controllers, etc in Device Manager - there may be warnings re. drivers. In any case I would suggest removing all the USB controllers and root hubs through Device Manager and rebooting. The alternative is to roll back the drivers for the USB controllers, but this may not help as they are generally sourced from MS.

I only have USB, no PS/2 input (Dell PC). The only area I can work is in the BIOS or XP repair but i do not know what to repair or how to do it.

Windows loads fine its just that i cannot do anything because the mouse or keyboard dont work.

Just a thought, but do you have access to a straight USB mouse/keyboard? - it may be the wireless that is fouled up. A USB mouse would be enough to prove the point and confirm the USB theory one way or another.

I rather fancy that a repair of XP may not solve the problem - I have no idea if the default MS drivers will overwrite the chipset drivers you loaded.

Would be worth checking in the BIOS that USB is enabled, but I guess you have been there already.
You didn't answer that question :) May need a USB mouse??

Hold fire until some of the other hardware guys drop in.

Have tried a straight usb mouse, it does not work, also the same problem occurs when i try safe mode, it appears that as soon as windows starts loading (full or safe), it just shuts off the usb inputs (i watch the lights on my wireless controller go out at windows start).

I guess you have tried the other USB ports?

I am at a loss as to what to suggest next, but feel confident that one of the other guys may have further ideas.

A thought for you - if push comes to shove and there is no means of resolving this barring a format you could install the drive as a slave in another computer and copy your data off and burn to CD/DVD - replace the drive in your computer and format, etc.

Alternatively you could install Windows on another hard drive in your computer and install the existing drive as slave which would give you access to your data. The only point I am not sure of is whether or not the Dell CD will load to another drive. I have a fancy that their CD's are full install CD's as opposed to Recovery CD's which contain a mirror of the drive as supplied.

Try booting w/ a standard keyboard into safe mode and select "last good ".

Thanks Pete, I picked the wrong tab.

Yes, I am hoping the command prompt will load basic USB drivers (only a maybe).

Before a format, I would try repairing the installation, which should be offered after booting to the Windows CD and pressing F8 for the Eula.

Thanks for all your help and advice. In the end I done a repair installation from the Dell Setup disk which did not (as it stated) wipe the hard drive, so i kept all my data.

    Thanks all again.

I always try a "repair" if all else fails :)

The Dell information about all data being lost, I seem to have come across that as well. [Although that is always a possibility when doing a repair.]

The problem about what you can do if the USB drivers are corrupt and there is no PS/2 connector. Good question. I could not find any suggestions at Dell (so maybe the only answer is to do a repair install).
