Installation freeze

Help
i cant install anything anymore on my system
im running xp and when windows installer has initiated and the software programme opens, eg itunes update, i click next and the software installer freezes and has to be ended as it is "not running "

First you need to get an updated version of HijackThis. Please download the HijackThis.exe from here, replace the copy in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis with it, then run a scan and save the log. Close that log and HijackThis.

Now download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your desktop.

• Close all applications and windows.
• Double click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
• When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of main.txt only for now.

Your logs look pretty good. Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entry. Close all open browser windows then click Fix Checked.

Download the Windows Installer 3.1 file and save it to your desktop.

Nope afraid it still didnt work
also i have windows live messenger installed and it appears as an icon on startup but when i hover over it on the task bar it disappears!

Did you try downloading the update file again? Is the file extension a .msi ?

How long do you wait before ending the hung installation? Not uncommon for an installer to appear to hang, depending on your system's available resources (memory and cpu) at the that time.

Did you by chance edit anything from the deckard's log? There is information missing that is generally in every log.

Yes and it still doesnt appear to install it just crashes
i think the file extension is a .exe but im unsure what u mean im quite the amateur

Ahhhhh this is well confusing

 

Generally a setup that uses Windows Installer service has an .msi extension, such as setup.msi
The fact that the setup file does run indicates there is not a problem running msi or exe files, only that the installation fails to complete.

Lets do a bit of cleanup. First, if you downloaded and saved the itunes update, delete it. Next, download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.

• Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Check the boxes to the left of:
  
  
  • Windows Temp
  • Current User Temp
  • All Users Temp
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Prefetch
  • Java Cache
  • Recycle bin
  
  
• The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
• Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.

Reboot

Try to update itunes again.

What exactly happens when you run the installer? Any error messages?

Right i click dwnload itunes from the apple website a file download window opens for itunessetup.exe i click run and the download begins, once the download is complete i click run on a new window that says do u want to run this software:

i click run and then a verifying itunessetup.exe window opens followed by windows installer, a window then opens for itunes + Quicktime installer
i click next and the hourglass appears briefly and then disappears and the window becomes non responsive

Also if i try to download something such as Mozilla Firefox everything goes ok until i click next and a message is displayed that says "please review the license terms before installing Mozilla Firefox" and the window then becomes non responsive.

So no there are no error messages.

 

And......

Also when trying to install software from the internet such as freewire this error message appears
Unhandled exception
Error Number: 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed: ISRT._WaitOnDialog
Setup will not terminate
any ideas?

 

Click the download link again, but this time instead of choosing Run, choose Save. A save dialog box will open. Click Desktop on the left side, then click Save. When the download commpletes, you can choose Run, or close and double click the setup file on your desktop.

It happens with pretty much any download from the internet but doesnt allow installation in a number of ways as previously outlined so its not just the itunes download although tht is of high importance to me as i cannot activate and use my ipod touch without the new version of itunes.

Also on itunes and then under help i can click on check for updates, itunes then checks for updates and a popup appears saying there is a new version of itunes available would u like to download i click yes and a different installation window appears for apple software update although again by clicking next the window becomes non responsive, i dont no if thts any help at all.

 

Lets see if we can get a log that will show us what's happening. The following assumes 2 things.

1. The downloaded iTunes setup file is on your desktop
2. The name of the setup file is iTunesSetup.exe

Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.
