I am trying to merge some 10 gigs of free space on my hdd into a working XP partition (F, in diskpartition, its volume 2). I went into the cmd, diskpartition, and was unable to extend my XP partition. Now on the positive side, I didn't blow up my computer, either.:)

OK I did two things. I typed in <volume 2>, then hit enter, and then at the F prompt, I typed in <extend>and then I was told to select a volume number.

So then I typed in <volume 2 extend>, and then hit enter, and nothing happened. I saw the menu of all the options to type in, but I was back at the F prompt. Coming out of the command prompt, I then looked at my F partition and it was still 11 gigs, and not 20-21.

    What should I do?

If you are addressing a system or boot partition, Diskpart Expand will not work on those..

Another problem may be that the unallocated space is not at the upper end of the present allocated space. It must be contigious at the upper end.

Another possibility would be that you have moved the Paging file to this partition. Moving it off to another partition would solve that problem.

Partition Magic can do that without data loss. There are some other 3rd party tool that work as well.
