Does anyone know what's the deal with this one?

It "is" out on a few of the Mac download sites I use, when Netscape's site makes no mention that I can see, though it's been out for close to a week now still no release notes.

On this site it's "billed" as a major upgrade:

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/2540

what do they mean by "major upgrade "? The push is to get this browser off the market due to webmasters "pulling their hair out" over trying to code for it. Is that beind improved? If not why do they keep upgrading and releasing it?

I myself have never had a problem with a friendly note to a webmaster if I've had a problem with Netscape 4 versions, I just ask for the best they can do to make it viewable, even if not perfect.

    But still...

What is the deal!!?? Is this version out? Or not?

    Hi Dreambird,

The site you mentioned is a little unclear about what is the major upgrade, 4.8 or the Communicator 4.xx series in general.

I remembered reading awhile back that Netscape Communicator is no longer being developed so I got curious and did some looking around:

This is from the newsgroup snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.communicator
And, this is copied from http://ufaq.org/ns6/why_4x.html

    Thanks much Alice... :)

Pretty much what I suspected ... I couldn't see what would be major about it...

I've downloaded the Mac version of the program, but that ftp site I can't even get "any" of the directories to open... I go to it in Opera and they open fine.
There's everything to download, except them release notes.

In light of that I'd have to conclude myself, not much of importance has changed... :(

    Thanks again Alice,

I just checked and those release notes still aren't out...

It usually doesn't take so long...

    Hey Dreambird,

Wow, what a treat to see you posting! You are sorely missed around here, and I wish you had time to drop by more often!

I guess the Windows Release Notes for 4.8 are the only ones available now. Surely the Mac Notes will be out soon.

    Later,

    Ramona :D

    Hi Ramona! :D

Good to see you again too...

I'll try to drop in more often, but I keep running out of "day" before "things to do "... ;)

Actually the realease notes for Mac are in that Windows link... you scroll down and it comes to MacOS... there doesn't seem to be much changed for us there.

I see with Windows you can use the Sun Java Plugins which I envy because I think they would be good, but they don't have a Mac version. Could be because Mac has it's own "MRJ" Mac Runtime for Java in the OS.
Plus I use the java plugins that Mozilla puts out.
