I have had Copernic on our XP desktop for a few years, and am happy with it. I just installed an XP partition on my laptop and obviously need a desktop search engine. Google is much too bloated. I just want a search engine, not the kitchen sink, and yes speed counts. It would have to be able to index documents on another partition (I am keeping all my files on a partition with Vista), but that shouldn't be a problem. Any recommendations--is anything better than Copernic out there?

    Hi, Paul. :)

I am not familiar with Copernic so I don't know whether Agent Ransack is comparable or not.

I have not used Agent Ransack yet either. I only have the link to the Agent Ransack home page bookmarked because I have seen it recommended here at Windows BBS. :)

Thanks. I've got that bookmarked and I'll look it over.

According to this link, Microsoft made a version of their desktop search for Vista, available for XP. I downloaded it and it works just as quickly, so I'm going to use this.

Plus, Agent Ransack's UI looks like it hasn't changed since Windows 95. That makes me a bit uneasy. Call me shallow, or whatever, dude. All I know is that I will sleep better at nights with a desktop search that has a 21st century UI.

Update on my search for an XP desktop search. I have installed Copernic because I have found that it offers almost immediate previews in a pane, whereas Windows Desktop search takes a good 10 seconds per preview. Now this is just a luxury, not a showstopper. But since Copernic offers just a quick a search, with much faster previews, I'll take it.
