    We need more info.
    How about an example?
Are you talking www.yahoo.com or something private?

Little confused since said two opposite things.
If you can ping the IP of a site but can’t ping the name of the site the problem is your DNS servers.
Purpose of DNS server is to resolve an internet name to an IP address.

If using XP go to Control Panel "“ Local area connection "“ properties "“TCP/IP "“ properties -.
Is Obtain DNS server automatically checked or do you have static settings in there?
If have static settings they ain’t working. Try getting them automatically. If that doesn't work contact your ISP for help and for placing their static DNS server IP addresses in your computer.
    Or
You can try this link for public DNS servers.

thanx for ur reply sir but according to my knowledge if we r not abel to ping the url but able to ping the ip then it shud be a issue with the dns but this is opposite case .........do u still think the issue is with that only although i hav checked that ...even i tried winsock fix to refresh the tcp ip settings but still the issue persists.............

    Have absolutely no idea.
Never ran into that where can ping name of a public site but can’t ping the IP address of it.
Hopefully someone else here can help.

Might help for someone else if gave operating system - network config - name of any firewalls.

Sorry for this but it's an intresting problem (long as it isn't mine) else I'd be saying a few non-bullentin board things. lol

Pls post back results when issue resolved.

    Ok I get it.

You can ping a web site by URL (DNS is working)

But you can't ping by IP.

First, how do you know your using the correct IP?

Second, what does it matter? Is there a problem we are not aware of?

If you can surf to the site and ping the site what's the real issue your not telling us?
