I've posted this on two other forums and have not received any answer. So, I'm trying here as well.

I've been using the alpha Netscape Messenger for my e-mail client for a few weeks and so far all is well. For the past two days I've tried using it as a newsreader for various newsgroups to which I belong.

I want the newsreader to display the portion of text responded to by others rather than just a line to the side. To date I cannot figure how to do this. What I mean by this is: Let us say that John B. posts a message. I respond to his message. Instead of seeing John's message, all I once I've responded is a line to the left column indicating that text 'was' there and my response. Should John B. respond to my response, all I would see would be his response and not the preceding responses which would now be indicated by two different colored lines. Obviously this is unacceptable since it renders long threads rather useless for following.

    Any solutions?

Interesting. Jay Garcia doesn't know the answer. No one on SD knows and apparently no one here knows. It must be a flaw in the program since I've explored just about every possible tweak I could imagine to get previous posts' texts to show up rather than empty lines but without success. As I mentioned to Jay, I guess it's back to Free Agent. NM may be a reasonably good e-mail client but so far it's proving to be a lousy newsreader. :(

    James,
as I replied to you at ufaq.org, I have to say that you are assuming that everyone uses a newsreader. I am not even sure what kind of newsreader you are talking about. May be you could try to be more specific, or you will not even get guesses.
I would not mind trying what you have, if you let me know.

Westside, I responded to you on the other forum. I am using the alpha Netscape Messenger as a newsreader. I'm not assuming all others use a newsreader. I'm asking for help and expect it from those who "do" use it. Those who do "not" use it should probably just let my post pass since they would be entirely confused by what I'm asking.

From everything that I can see, there is no apparent answer to my question. Evidently Netscape have decided to change the manner in which its e-mail client/newsreader used to work and have dropped that feature. So, I'm forced to find another and that will probably my ancient copy of Free Agent which still works the way it is supposed to work. Thanks anyway.

James, I understood what you meant. I have Messenger, as well as all sort of other mail programs. I could check what is happening to you, but I don't have any idea how. I will try to subscribe to a couple of newsgroups, and also compare it with Thunderbird.
I did it with the Cox, Omaha newsgroup. I see no difference between Messenger and Thunderbird.
Since, I posted with a reply to the original message, I could see only my message and the original message.
