Ever since I installed 942615, IE frequently crashes, with the faulting module being URLMON.DLL. I also noticed that I click on links, buttons, etc etc, and IE just sits and does nothing. I hit escape on the KBd, then re-click the link / button, and it works OK.

    Then I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823386
It describes perfectly what I'm seeing. I can always un-install 942615, but I have a patching client (PatchLink) on my work system here, and the patch will only 'come back...'

As described in the article, I sent a request to Microsoft to get the patch that fixes this. --anyone else seen this? -Is there any other way to fix it?

batsona - Welcome to the Board :)

This seems to be an IE 6 specific and I haven't run that since the first IE 7 beta appeared. However you might try re-registering urlmon.dll and see if that helps......

    Start > Run > regsvr32 urlmon.dll > OK.

I un-installed KB942615, and I'm back to version 6.0.2900.3199. The version that was giving me a fit was 6.0.2900.3231. The KB article above apparently only pertained to IE6, SP1. I have IE6, SP2, however I'm noticing the exact same symptoms.

I'll try re-installing KB942615 & see if the problem persists.

If you're seeing iexplore.exe error for APP: 6.0.2900.2180 Mod Name: urlmon.dll Ver 6.0.2900.3231 at 0003b5ce then the MS link below has its Hotfix request. The hotfix was emailed to me last night, and there's a regedit to do afterwards. I'm still evaluating if it worked, because it was a sporadic error. Be sure to backup your registry.

There is also an IE7 error for some users {like me too} in App: iexplore.exe Ver: 7.0.6000.16574.

    From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627

I don't have this problem and KB942367 is not installed on my system. Why did I get KB946627? The DWORD value was created but to me, it seems like blowing into an empty hole ... ... ! As I understand it, you need to request KB942367 from Microsoft, install it and then KB946627 does the registry editing.

Two of us in this thread had the IE6 iexplore.exe urlmon.dll problem discussed, caused by MS update KB942615. That is the fix.

If you didn't have the error don't worry about it. :)

I'm not worried about my own system but about others who have the error and install KB946627 without having installed KB942367.

As I understand it, KB946627 is useless without KB942367. I don't think the installation order is important (maybe that's why I did get KB946627 - to be ready for KB942367 if needed). If the hotfix or the "DWORD value" is installed first doesn't matter but the "DWORD value ", referring to KB942367, is useless if KB942367 is not installed and concequently KB946627 fixes nothing.

    I may have misunderstood, though.

Yes, that regedit is my earlier link: it fixed KB942615 that caused iexplore.exe urlmon.dll errors in some IE installations on Win XP SP2. And right, MS did not say that it was a hotfix/replacement to anything, they simply issued it. What, you don't trust them??? *grin*

As near as I can tell the update progression was KB942615 caused errors in some installations. KB942367 was the hotfix. The regedit adding DWORD * enabled KB 942367 (which is what i did.) Then there were enough instances of the errors worldwide for MS to later issue that emailed hotfix and the regedit * as KB946627.

Trying to unravel several KB updates and patches all started I think by MS 07-069 (and why do they switch between nomenclature for the same update, it just confuses issues even more?) is IMO a waste of time in this case because only MS knows the whys and wherefores, which they aren't sharing. The hotfix MS emailed me to fix the iexplore.exe urlmon.dll random error was at hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows%20XP/sp3/Fix206837/.../325246_ENU_i386_zip (edited to prevent linking), available with a password they sent. The hotfix was actually made by Xceed Software Inc. MS must have had many error reports, because they issued KB946627 which is identical to the emailed hotfix.

An interesting thing in that address is the "..XP/sp3.. ". I backtracked the address, or tried to, and was denied access Not Authorized.

Since I haven't seen the emailed hotfix, only KB946627, I should probably stay out of this but does "identical" mean "the same size, date and digital signature "? If so, it really is confusing because on my system, KB946627 did the registry editing that the user him-/herself is supposed to do after installing KB942367.

This is also confusing ... ... a different number for which a search at Microsoft brings up unrelated (to this issue) results (I think): http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=325246&qsc0=0&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99

"the same size, date and digital signature "? I doubt it (i deleted the .zip so can't check.) The MS patch KB946627 performed what the hotfix zip from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6294451 plus the regedit from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/942367 did, so "identical" wasn't the right word. They just did the same thing. And Now, since MS issued KB946627 to fix the iexplore.exe urlmon.dll error that some IE6 installations had after KB942615, that hotfix zip and regedit are moot.

So for the earlier question "...about others who have the error (iexplore.exe urlmon.dll)..." the answer now is to simply install the KB946627 update offered by MS Automatic Updates.

Those certainly were  MS search results. I see on the second page that:

They would be better off using google instead of Live Search.

Now for that second cup of coffee...

    Rex,
I have to believe what you are saying, that KB946627 did the same thing as "KB942367 + manual regedit" but ... ... I still find the documentation (Microsoft) to be "out of sync" with your description.

The fix will probably (?) be included in the next cumulative update for IE6.

I wouldn't be surprised that something was out of sync, progressing through those now-old updates and patches gave me a headache.

But the single-update Fix for the iexplorer.exe urlmon.dll error caused by KB942615 in some installations is already available: KB946627
