Hi, everyone!:)Been having some problems getting rid of this infection.I looked at the other threads related to this topic but my infecion seems to be a little different. I have used an online virus scan by trend micro that didn't find anything. My antivirus(Mcafee free trial)says my system is clean.Spybot search and destroy keeps picking up something called Zlob.DNSchanger.I am posting a hijackthis logfile and the only entry that looks out of place is 017.I have tried fixing it in normal boot and safe mode but upon restart it reappears. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:D

    Hi hllstrHUNTER,

That 017 is likely being put back by Spybot, in defense of the rogues. ;)

Download SmitfraudFix by S!Ri, saving it to the desktop.

    • Restart the computer in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key upon startup and selecting Safe Mode from the Advanced Startup Menu. Logon to your account.
    • Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool and press 2, then hit Enter.
    • You will be prompted 'Do you want to clean the registry?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter.
    • If prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll file (if found), answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
    • Reboot to normal mode when the tool completes.

Post the contents of C:\rapport.txt and a fresh dss log.

Hi, noahdfear.Thank you for the reply.:) When this problem first started spybot S&D was picking up a "smitfraud-C" and "smitfraud-C.msvps ". I searched around and found a similar program to the one you had me download (smitfraudfix) that was supposed to be a fix for all variants of smitfraud and claimed to be written by you but I can't remember where I got it from(had the web address written down but i threw it away after I thought the problem was fixed, along with some other notes I had taken).Anyway here are the results of the rapport.text log and a fresh DSS log.

BTW, (this might be a topic for another forum or it could be related to my problem), while going through my add or remove programs list I noticed that there were no windows updates listed at all, and yes I made sure the box was checked to show updates. The only windows related listings were a few updates for IE 7 and windows media player. Is this something new with windows or did something uninstall all my updates? I also tried to manually search for updates at the microsoft update website and it searches for a while then gives me an error message stating that the site has encountered a problem or something like that.

You may well have run my smitfraud removal tool, smitRem, however I quit updating it over a year ago. ;)

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries then click Fix Checked,

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Locate and delete the followig files.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumphive.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\IEDFix.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Process.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SrchSTS.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\VCCLSID.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\WS2Fix.exe

Click Start then Run and type ncpa.cpl then hit Enter. Right click on your active internet connection and select Properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list and click Properties. Make sure both 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address Automatically' options are selected and click OK, then OK to close the properties window. Close Network Connection console.

Now click Start then Run and type inetcpl.cpl and hit enter. Click the Connections tab, then click LAN Settings. Uncheck 'Use proxy server for your LAN if selected, then OK out.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Go back to Windows Update and let me know what happens there. I need exact error messages if you receive any.

Yes, smitrem, that was the name of it. Over a year ago, huh? Leave it to me to not even look at the date of the post on the forum I was looking at.:D

When deleting these files I noticed that some of them had the name S!ri on them. Were these part of the smitfraudfix? Just curious.:)
Also I noticed a file next to C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg named tmp.txt.since there was nothing in this text file and it was created at the same time I figured there was no harm in deleting it too. Hope I wasn't wrong in doing that.

I went back to the windows update site and I am now in the process of downloading the validation tool. So I am guessing that my updates were deleted and I have to start all over with them.

Here is the new HJT log...

Just as I posted my other reply the validation tool finished downloading. I again checked for updates and there were no high priority updates available only a few optional sofware and one hardware. I checked my add or remove programs list again and found that I now have 2 windows genuine advantage validation tools installed< one from when I first got the computer and one that I just downloaded. Both with the same number KB892130.

Yes, those were files related to smitfraudfix.

I doubt you lost all updates ...... but let me know. When you're able to close all open browser windows, scan again with HijackThis and fix the following entry.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:8080

Should you experience any problems connecting to the internet afterward, open HijackThis to the Misc Tools section>Backups and restore that entry, then try again.

Lets run an online scan to be sure we haven't missed anything. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky log and one more fresh HijackThis log.

No need. I personally entered this information myself as part of my internet connection settings. Has something to do with using a graphics accelerator with my ISP. I know that I will not be able to connect without this.

Had trouble last night with kapersky downloading definitions file and decided to call it a night. Sarted fresh this afternoon and I am currently downloading the files. Will post back with results when I get them. As for windows updates issue: I still have no updates showing in add or remove programs list. Windows update website only shows a few optional software and 1 hardware update. I still have the problem with now having two windows genuine advantage validation tools installed, one from yesterday and one from when I first bought the pc. I also noticed two folders in C:\programfiles that I don't remember being there prior to this infection, one named windows update and the other named uninstall information, both of which are empty.

Most of what shows up in the KAV scan is not a threat, however it reports your explorer.exe as being infected, as well as the copy in the dllcache directory. Lets see what other copies you have. Please highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.

    Code:
    dir %Systemroot%\explorer.exe /a h /s > "%userprofile%\desktop\expl.txt "
    start notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\expl.txt "

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Right click and paste the copied text into the command window. When the start notepad line appears in the command window, hit enter. expl.txt will open. Please copy and post it's contents back here.

You can leave this page open while you do the following. Close any open folders. Open a command window. Open Task Manager to the processes tab. Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.

    Code:
    ren C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe explorer.exe.old
    ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe explorer.exe.old
    copy C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB938828\SP2QFE\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS
    copy C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB938828\SP2QFE\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
    cls
    if exist C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe echo system32\explorer.exe present> "%userprofile%\desktop\check.txt "
    if exist C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe echo dllcache\explorer.exe present>> "%userprofile%\desktop\check.txt "
    if exist C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe.old echo system32\explorer.exe.old present>> "%userprofile%\desktop\check.txt "
    if exist C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explorer.exe.old echo dllcache\explorer.exe.old present>> "%userprofile%\desktop\check.txt "
    start notepad "%userprofile%\desktop\check.txt "
    cls
Now, select explorer.exe in the Task Manager and click End Process. Your taskbar will disappear but this page, the command window and Task Manager will remain open. Right click in the command window and select paste. When notepad opens, click File>New Task (Run) in the Task Manager. Type explorer and hit enter. Your taskbar should reappear. Copy the contents of the notepad and post it here.

Hmmm...... did explorer start back up? Please navigate to C:\Windows and see if the explorer.exe and explorer.exe.old exist.

Odd they didn't show up in the log. Delete the check.txt, expl.txt, SmitfraudFix.exe and SmitfraudFix folder from your desktop, then empty the recycle bin. Please run another Kaspersky scan and post the results here. Let me know how your computer is behaving.
