I couldn't find how to add a new post so I am commenting here

I have a problem with my HP Pavillion a1739n AMD and Vista Home Premium
I have two DVD burners one is the HP unit and the other is a LG
Not all the time but a way to many times when I put a disc in one burner or the other, I get a small box that pops up with a heading 'Burn a disc; and it says in the box 'Prepare this blank disc'.
Now the disc is not blank and I just can't get it to go away. Now if I switch users and leave the administrative login, they work fine so this rules out a hardware issue.
Burning discs seem to work okay and it balks at all discs including manufacture copies and even good music CD
Ever hear of this or able to guide me in correcting this frustrating item

    Hi,

There is a reply from a Vista technician here:

The method of "Clean Boot" will rule out third-party programs.

Here is the "heavy-duty" method of resetting the optical drives:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us

Since your system works in the non(?) administrator account, I expect there is a difference in settings between the accounts. One setting I just noted is the Autoplay settings. Check in Control Panel -> Autoplay. Is Autoplay set to run (checkbox at top-left)? Try resetting defaults.

Considering it may be the way the drives are accessed or run, I might look at the jumper settings on the drives. Expecting that they are IDE, not SATA, and that they are on the same cable, I might try reversing them in the master/slave locations.
Further, they will be run through the IDE Controller (drivers). Look for an update for the motherboard chipset drivers (look up your model at the HP website).

    Matt

    Much appreciated

I noticed, thanks to you that I had all the drives set to 'Take No action' the box to engage the autoplay was not turned on.

Both my main drive and one of the DVD players are in fact SATA
The other DVD (LG) is a standard IDE setup as a Master drive and that is wierd because when one fails the other sometimes works but it can be in any order.

My next step is to disconnect both drives, remove the units in windows and remove all entries in the registry and run for a few days without them and the reconnect. I removed one Microsoft item called a integrator and since then, they have been responding okay but only time will tell

I am going to look at the links you sent and will advise
