I use MS Word from Office 2003. I have a return address in my normal.dot file. I have followed the help directions to change the normal template, but it don't work. We now have a new address and I have to manually change it every time. Any ideas??

Really you should not be editing normal.dot as this is the blank page that opens with Word - setting a style or font is OK, but including an address I would think to be inconvenient.

I suggest you delete normal.dot with Word closed - it will be recreated with default settings of font, line spacing etc.

On a new Word document lay out the page as you want it for your letterhead and then go Save As and select Template (.dot) from the dropdown list and name it Letterhead or anything you like.

This will appear under File > New (select Templates - from my computer from the Template Window on the RHS of the screen).

I find it convenient to create shortcuts to my letterheads - I have several, on the desktop. Double clicking opens Word with the right template open as a new document.

Thanks Pete, but that does not answer my question.
I searched the help "change normal template" and got instructions that did not work for me. I do want to permanently change the normal.dot file to my own setup. I have done this for years until Office 2003. This is the first time I could not make changes stay. I keep getting my old address.

    Anyone else have any answers?

    OK .....

    Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot

Right click on normal.dot > open. Opens in Word - check that the title bar in Word shows Normal.dot - Microsoft Word

    Amend as required and Save.

That process works in Word 2003 for me.

Have you tried deleting normal.dot and then opening Word - the page should be blank.

If so, close Word and proceed as my last post.
