I have always been able to put a check mark in toggle keys, hit apply and ok then I would have sound if I accidentally hit the caps lock button. I cannot get this function to hold the check mark and work period, what could be causing this?

    Thanks,
    Reid

Can you give us a little more info? The toggle keys you're talking about isn't something that is part of Windows. My guess is it's a function of the driver for your keyboard. What kind of keyboard is this (make and model). Where do you go to activate this feature? Control Panel?

This is a HP model 5181 keyboard running Windows XP Pro with service pack 2. I was always able to go into "accessibility options" then into the "keyboard tab" put a check mark in "toggle keys" hit apply and OK then there would be sound if you accidentally hit the "caps lock" button. I can't get the box to hold a check mark and there is no sound where there should be on the "num lock ", "caps lock" and "scroll lock" buttons.

Thanks for trying to help me,
    Reid

I am not sure if this is the case, but the last time I had problems with keyboard options was because of a windows update and HP had a download that corrected the problem. Suggest that you visit HP's site and try user support section and downloads to see if there is a download that corrects your problem.

The downloads are all updated, what exactly would I look for or is there a way for me to ask them a support question?

I'm not really sure where you'd go for this. I've been searching their sight but haven't been able to come up with anything. The only thing I can find with a model number of 5181 is a Compaq desktop system with a wireless mouse and keyboard. Is this what you have?

I checked my accessibility options and I don't have that feature. All I have related to a keyboard of any kind is an on screen keyboard. I've worked with keyboards that had this feature but it was always a function of some kind of third party software so my guess is that if you didn't install it, it's something that HP includes in the install. I'll keep looking and see what I can find.

    Hi all,

Holding down the Num Lock key for 5 seconds turns on ToggleKeys.
A message will come on the screen......choose whichever option you want!

Do the same to turn ToggleKeys off.

I don't understand why your XP installation doesn't show ToggleKeys on the Keyboard tab in CP > Accessibility Options because, apparently, it's built into the OS. I say that because it's discussed in XP's Help and Support.

I've used a number of different generic keyboards with my computer, and I've always had, and used, ToggleKeys.

On the other hand, I don't show anything that would display an onscreen keyboard. I think each of us may have something, somewhere, turned off.

HP and Compaq are the same manufacture but this has all HP logo, it is hard to say who makes what this day and time.

    Works on mine...WinXP Home SP2.
It says 5 seconds on the message.....but it seems to take a bit longer than that on mine. You should hear a short beep.

This is some very good information and may solve my problem but is a little over my head. I am a farmer and never touched a computer until I was 55 years old so I have to be spoon fed instructions.

Holding the "num lock" key does nothing on this computer.

Sorry, but it's a little over my head, too. Maybe one of the brainier people here can explain it to both of us

OK, I guess I lied. You know what they say about learning something new every day. :) I've never known about that. I've never had it in the start menu on any system I've had. However, pressing and holding num lock does open it on mine too and it does work. So, it would seem that it's probably an XP problem here rather than a driver issue. Guess I need to shift gears here. I'll see what I can find for you.

Puppypaws, I am not sure if this might help? Go to control panel then click on accessibility options and try clicking on settings box that is beside toggle keys. Put check in use shortcut. It is worth a try. Then you maybe able to use the num lock shortcut.

Yes, this is exactly where you should be able to put the check mark in "toggle keys ", hit apply and OK then there should be an audible sound if you hit the "caps lock" by accident. I can't return without the check mark disappearing. Marty, I have also tried the shortcut and nothing works, a few days ago it worked perfectly.
