    Hi,

Recently, i accidently deleted a file, first from my documents and then from the recycling bin. I immediately downloaded a trial version "uneraser" from the internet and actually managed to find the file in question. However, when I tried to restore the file, it said that I needed to purchase the full version of the uneraser. Naturally, this isn't something I want to do.

Is there any way I can retrieve my deleted file for free?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sometimes you have to pay for your mistakes :)

Try this freebie - File Recovery Just remember the more you use the computer since you deleted the file the more likely it is to have been overwritten.

When you delete a file the reference to it is removed from the file system, but the file remains on disk, but the space occupied by it is flagged as 'available' and will be used as and when for new data. Don't be surprised if you can no longer recover the file.

    I am confused

I viewed the PC Inspector program information; Manual and FAQ and became a little confused. Between the Manual and FAQ information I thought it said that the PC Inspector program should not be on the same drive that the file was on that you were attempting to recover. In my case I have only one drive. This is the drive where Windows XP Pro is located as well as all my other programs. Am I to install the PC Inspector program to this drive to recover a deleted file on this drive or not? It is getting late and I am beginning to hallucinate. Any replies to this posting will be appreciated.

You are correct - the program must be installed on another drive - a fact I was not aware of, not having used the software. This renders it pretty useless for the majority of users.

I have successfully used their Smart Recovery software to recover files from flash memory - camera CF cards.

If you are in need of a file recovery program I suggest a Google - I have no experience of any bar Smart Recovery.

    PC Inspector

Thanks for your reply PeteC. I wonder what the reason is for the program having to be on a drive other than the drive the deleted file is on. I don't, at least not at this time, have the need for a recovery program. But, I am adding it to my arsenal of tools because I am going to purchase an external drive soon. The really important information will be kept on the external drive. And while I may never have a need for the program it seems to be something too good to pass up. Again, thanks very much for your reply. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

I hope you mean backed up to the external drive - as you know external hard drives are equally prone to failure, just like internals.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to your and yours, too :)

FWIW, I've used several free file recovery programs with varying degrees of success. The one I liked the least, by far, was PC Inspector.

Others worth trying are: FreeUndelete, Recuva, and Undelete Plus.

A suggestion from MY OWN PERSONAL mistakes.

Have MORE THAN ONE drive/partition and MAKE BACKUPS

    Better yet.
