Programs sometimes start twice, freeze computer

Hi,

wondering if anyone else has run into this or heard of it....since building a new computer about a year ago, a select few programs sometimes run twice, usually but not always locking up computer till I use the 'end task' button in Task Manager. My anti-virus (AGV7.5) will actually run dual instances of itself at the same time, gobbling up virtually all resources and making my computer run v-e-r-y-s-l-o-w. Others like online bible, freeze the computer and only an 'end task' will allow me to get unfrozen.

Anyone else ever run into this?
