That is the message I get when trying to burn a CD using Windows XP. When I drag and drop to the CD writer in Explorer the files are entered into the "write to CD" queue. When I click "write these files to CD" I get a message that there is no CD in the drive.

I would rather not have to purchase any software since I really don't burn many CD's and I just wanted to back up some files. Can anyone help?

Hrm... Not really sure, but I would first check to make sure the device is correctly configured. Right click on "my computer ", click properties, click on the "Hardware" tab and click " device manager... Double click on the drive in question and make sure it says "This device is working properly. "

If the computer recognises it, and it's working properly according to the computer, I'm not sure... Maybe the lens is dirty. Maybe your drive isn't fully supported.. I'm not sure.

Welcome to the boards. Glad to have you with us.

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck here but do you have a non closed or brand new cdr or cdrw disc in your burner?

What kind of burner do you have? Software? Has the thing ever worked before? Will it play an audio cd, install a program?

Come back and let us know these things and we may be able to help.:)

    Hi Bill.

Yes, I do have a brand new CD-R in the drive. I have tried several different CD-R's and CD-RW's. I thought that I might need to format it, but I don't see where the option to do that is. Just so you know, this computer previously had Windows ME and DirectCD, which worked just fine, but I have recently reformatted the hard drive and clean-installed XP Professional.

Oh....and just to confuse you even more.....I have another computer running XP Professional, and I can burn CD's just fine using the Windows CD Wizard. I just pop a brand new CD into the drive and I'm good to go copying and pasting through Explorer.

Both computers are HP's with an HP burner. I don't have any CD burning software on either one....I was hoping to use just the Windows CD Wizard, and as I said before, it works on one computer but not the other. I'm going crazy trying to find what the difference is between the two computers and why one will work but the other one won't.

    Hey Janelle,

I'm not familiar with XP as I'm using win98se but if it were on my machine I think I would uninstall the burner and let windows pick it up again and reinstall the drivers. Do you have a disc for installing drivers for your burner or do you use the windows version?

Someone who is familiar with XP would probably be of more help for you on this one. Maybe Daizy will jump in?
