Windows Update keeps telling me I need MS Net Framework Sevice Pack 1. I have tried several times to install this update but it fails with error code 80070002.
I have followed the instructions given in help and deleted the temp updates files and folders.
I also went to the MS link for trouble shooting and located the versions it said to look for. However I have an additional folder that is version 3.
Should I just leave it the way it is and ignore the updates for Net Framework service Pack 1?
What should I do about the v.3 that is installed on my Vista OS? I assume that is why the Service Pack update is failing because I already have a higher version installed.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Joyce,

You can start by determing the version now on your system:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied

    I've had same problem.
I uninstalled NET framework ver. 1 through Control Panel, and then SP1 installed without a problem.

Charles, that is the same link I went to and opened the folders to see what I had installed.

In Add/Remove programs it shows I have Net Framework 1.1 and Net Framework 1.1 Hot Fix (KB929729).

As listed in the link I cannot find "%systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework" so I did a search to find the Microsoft.Net folder. Can't find %systemroot% in Vista.

I have 2 Microsoft.Net folders. 1 in C:/Program Files/Microsoft.Net which has a subfolder called "Primary Intrerop Assemblies" and in that folder are .dll files and 1 in C:/Windows/Microsoft Net, this folder contains subfolders "v1.0.3705" v1.1.4322 "v2.0.50727" all of which are the versions listed on the MS link you posted ........but I also have a subfolder "v3.0" which is NOT referred to in the MS article.

So if I unistall Net Framework 1.1 and the hotfix in Add/Remove as broni has suggested what do I do with v.3 if it doesn't uninstall it also? Wouldn't I then still be left with the same problem?

I had this problem in the past so I found the Net.Framework service pack and did a direct download and saved it to my computer and installed it and it installed fine and I didn't have the update problem anymore, it stopped telling me I needed Service Pack 1.1, so I thought that had fixed the problem. However yesterday when Windows Updated again it came up with the Net.Framework Service Pack 1.1 but failed to install.

According to the MS link I should have 3 versions installed (listed above) but I have 4 versions installed (the addtional v.3).

So what should I do? Why do I have v.3.0 when MS says there are only 3 versions quote from MS article "Note If you see other directories that have a vN.N.NXXXX format that are not listed in this article, the versions may be beta versions or pre-released versions of the .NET Framework. Those versions are outside the scope of this article. "

Am I supposed to have v.3.0?? And if not how do I remove it, better yet HOW did I get it? Will it remove it I remove Net.Framework 1.1 and the Hotfix in Add/Remove Programs or will I still be stuck with the same problem? Or should I just ignore the failed installations and stay with what I have?
