    Hello All,

So here's the story. I got infected with this Brave Sentry fake spy-ware thing and I've spent a few days now trying to get rid of it with this smitrem.exe application that other forums have recommended. I am this close to just taking my computer in to a store and getting it fixed, but I want to give it one last shot.

The problem is this. This virus has managed to disable my ability to be an administrator on my own computer. One of the steps in getting rid of this thing is to clean the registry, but I can't do that without getting a "Registry Cleaning Has Been Disabled By Your Administrator." Also, I can't close any of the processes because "Task Manager Has Been Disabled By Your Administrator." Further, I can't get to Add/Remove Programs because the Control Panel seems to have just disappeared from the START menu.

I've done a sweep with SpySweeper and it didn't help. I have to do everything in Safe Mode because I get the old 'blue screen of death' whenever it tries to log on to the regular desktop.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a 2004 Sony Vaio Laptop, if that's helpful.

I'm not a very advanced computer whiz, so if anyone has any ideas as to how I can get rid of this thing and get my system back to how it was, PLEASE reply and let me know, and be as detailed as possible.

    Thanks so much in advance!

    -Carlo

Download both - install HijackThis and run Deckard's scanner and post the Main text - this will contain a Hijackthis log ......
Then please be patient until one of our trained analysts reaches your thread - dealt with in the order posted.
