I did a groups.google.com search and I see that the first step to uninstalling and reinstalling the McAfee active shield is as follows:

    From: (snip)
    Subject: Re: Mcafee Clinic

I had the same problem this is how I fixed it. After you follow these steps log back in to http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/default.asp? and click on the update active shield. It will reinstall correctly.

    Manual Uninstall of McAfee ActiveShield

    Remove the Agent

    1. Click Start and highlight Programs.
    2. Highlight McAfee.com Agent and click Uninstall McAfee.com Agent. Click
    Yes to confirm the uninstallation.
    3. When the uninstallation is complete, click Close.
    (snip)

    - the rest of the instuctions have to do with removing the leftover files and registry entries. I guess your problem is that you do not wish to remove the Agent software because you are using another McAfee product (Uninstaller?) that uses it.

The only thing I can suggest is to try contacting McAfee again and explain your problem. It is possible that you may have to remove ALL McAfee software then reinstall.

Not for nothing but I see lots of complaints about McAfee antivirus. I use InoculateIT Personal Edition (IPE) and have no problems. It is no longer officially freeware although IPE v 5.2.9 can still be downloaded from http://cws.internet.com/virus-inoculate.html

You can get information on the paid version of IPE here: http://www2.my-etrust.com/products/info/Antivirus/2

It is possible that you may have to remove ALL McAfee software then reinstall.

From my past experience with the mentioned software it is more than possible it IS A MUST to remove all.

This may require a MANUAL regedit and find for any and all references to McAfee. Otherwise you may not get a re-install to work properly.

I also found that the above applies to NORTON AV also.

I also have found that the above applies more so if the program is not behaning properly, Which may mean that the install did not go right. Which means the un-inatall may not work properly either.

A 2nd install over an existing bad install may more than DOUBLE the problems.

McAfee & Norton AV are VERY DEMANDING when it comes to the installation of same.

    Virus outbreaks boost McAfee, Symantec
    Riva RichmondDow Jones NEWS

NEW YORK "” It's not too common for analysts to be audibly breathless over Internet technology companies anymore. But antivirus software makers Symantec Corp and McAfee.com Corp. elicited something like rapture after reporting quarterly earnings results last week that blew Wall Street estimates away. Symantec "knocked the cover off the ball," said Jessica Kourakos, an analyst at Goldman Sachs. "It was a great quarter. They over-delivered on practically every metric," said Lehman analyst Israel Hernandez, a one-time skeptic. "No red flags raised on my end. I'll be upgrading the stock tomorrow." "People were looking for a very strong quarter (from McAfee.com) and that's just what they got," said John Feeney of Credit Suisse First Boston. "All the business metrics came back very solid." Antivirus is looking like a star in the technology sky. Both Symantec and McAfee.com reported strong sales, primarily driven by damaging computer-virus outbreaks in recent months. Symantec, in its fiscal third-quarter report, said sales from its core antivirus-software grew 53 per cent year over year, which Kourakos called "phenomenal." Consumer sales growth was much stronger than expected at 49 per cent, aided by virus outbreaks as well as upgrades connected to the launch of Windows XP. Symantec reported December-quarter revenue of $290 million (U.S.), up 20 per cent from last year's $241.8 million. Net earnings came in at break-even, compared to 21 cents a share a year ago and a loss of 16 cents in the September quarter. Before charges, net income was $59.4 million, up 47 per cent from $40.4 million a year ago and EPS was 78 cents, up 50 per cent from 52 cents. Symantec had projected EPS before charges of 60 cents to 70 cents on revenue of $260 million to $270 million. Analyst consensus estimates were for 64 cents on revenue of $264 million. McAfee.com, an antivirus software service provider majority owned by Network Associates Inc., also posted strong revenue growth of 54 per cent year over year and 15 per cent sequentially. McAfee.com posted fourth-quarter revenue of $18.6 million, beating the Thomson Financial analysts' consensus view of $17.45 million. Fourth-quarter net income was $904,000, or 2 cents a share, compared with a loss of $7.9 million, or 18 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding charges, net income was $4.2 million, or 9 cents a share, compared with a pro-forma net loss of $2.8 million, or 6 cents a share, a year ago.

    McAfee reinstall

I have had numerous problems with updating McAfee Virus Scan & Personal Firewall. After many online chats and emails, I almost always end up having to do a manual uninstall of the program.
If you go to the McAfee Forum, you will see many messages about a "loop" happening when trying to update or reinstall the Firewall. problems.
I am afraid to use the freeware or shareware programs becuase I don't think they can provide the customer service that McAfee can.
At least with McAfee I eventually got directions that solved the problem. But these directions took more than an hour each time to complete, and you really had to be comfortable with having to edit the registry.
Norton is having worse problems from what I read on their forums.
