History: Back in Oct. after uninstalling zone alarm, my winxp crashed and had to have winxp re-installed. Now system has 2 winxp's on it. Anyways, have recently purchased Turbotax 2007 and have tried to install it on the working windows. While installing, it will also install/?update Microsoft.net. And here is were the problem starts.

It will install (microsoft.net) half way and then give an error message of code 1406 and then something else, then quit.

Is there a work around or should I say, how does one go about installing microsoft.net? I did download the latest version of this as well as version 1 & 2.

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

Hi, RayW. :)

What version of .NET Framework is TurboTax trying to install?

Can you provide additional details about the exact wording of error messages you get? That exact wording might help us locate possible solutions more easily.

Note: Different software packages may require different versions of .NET Framework and it seems (from my recollection and Googling on this issue) that .NET Framework versions are not necessarily backward-compatible. Different software packages may be written to use specific .NET Framework versions.

==========

Perhaps Event Viewer will provide more details about the error(s) with installing TurboTax.

Instructions About How to Access and Use "Event Viewer ":

• Click Start.
• Right-click My Computer.
• Select "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window.
(Event Viewer will be displayed under the "System Tools" directory item.)
• Expand "Event Viewer" and then select "Application ", "Security ", and "System" to view the logs.
• Look for "error" events that occurred around the time your problem occurred. These events will be displayed as icons with either a white X on red background or a black exclamation point on yellow background. In the security section of Event Viewer, events of possible concern are ones that display a padlock icon instead of a key icon.
• Double-click on an individual event to open the "Event Properties" window which shows details about the event.
• You can use the up/down arrow buttons in the "Event Properties" window to move your focus to other events in the list.
• Use the button below the up/down arrows to copy the details for an event to your clipboard for pasting elsewhere.
• Click on the "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp" link in the "Event Properties" window to view more information from Microsoft about the event.

Alternatively, Event Viewer may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.

==========
There are several Microsoft Knowledge Base links about installing .NET Frameworks.
I'm not sure what particular articles may pertain to you.

This is the error message that I keep getting. "Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 -- Error 1406.Could not write value ComponentID to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{7131646D-CD3C-40F4-97B9-CD9E4E6262EF}. System error . Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. "

I've already tried the uninstall program from Microsoft. But it tells me nothing is installed. I've also tried from Microsoft ~ how to troubleshoot Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 installation issues ~ Article #908077. Didn't work.

When I checked the registry, under Installed Components, I couldn't find or it didn't show up "{7131646D-CD3C-40F4-97B9-CD9E4E6262EF}. "

Have a look at the permissions for that registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{7131646D-CD3C-40F4-97B9-CD9E4E6262EF}

Right click on the key and choose permissions and make sure it's set so that you have both read and write access.

If that's not the problem, you can try downloading and installing Windows Installer and then trying it again. I don't know if that will help or not but sometimes it seems to take care of these types of problems.

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

Tried that but I don't have a file {7131646D-CD3C-40F4-97B9-CD9E4E6262EF} listed in the active setup\installed component.

Have also tried installing Windows Installer v2 but that was of no help.

Thank you for suggestion though.

Try creating one and see what happens. Can't hurt to try it.

DISCLAIMER/CAUTION: Editing/cleaning/repairing your computer's registry is potentially dangerous. You might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Before you edit/clean/repair your registry with any method, be sure you make a backup of your registry and you know how to access and use that backup in case you muck up your computer.

If you decide to manually edit your registry, then be sure you are comfortable with editing the registry and I suggest you save a backup of at least the section you edit ahead of time in case you need/want to reverse your changes. Editing the registry can produce serious undesirable consequences if done incorrectly.

In any case, you should know ahead of time how to restore your original registry settings and prepare to do so in case the need arises.

I also suggest you create a System Restore point before making any changes (regardless of what method you use). System Restore may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
