Saftey has nothing to do with what is nearby. It has to do with the exposed electrical connections INSIDE.
Everybody keeps mentioning kids and pets. What about us as the actual USERS ? We are also prone to accidents. And/or doing things without thinking.
When the cover is off of the case there are bare electrical comnnection exposed. And that is a VERY dangreous situation for anbody.
And under the right conditions they can HURT badly. Maybe not the initial shock but what you hit when you jump.
Leaving the cover off is an accident waiting to happen. Putting the cover on is prevention. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure anyday.
Again the bottom line is overall SAFTEY

Also in my case leaving the cover off I would be minus a cooling fan. Which BTW I just looked at and see it needs cleaning.

That is true. BUT IT DOES COVER things and STOP YOU from contacting the internal electrical connections.

OK my Friend you brought it up so here comes and answer.

There is MORE danger of fire with the cover off as it leaves the possibility of dropping/bouncing something into it IE a metal paperclip. ( whiich could cause short circuit) A certain type type of pen. A piece of paper.

Paper may not be as much a fire problem as it would be getting caught in a fan and stalling it which may cause even more overloading of things.

Now. Just since my last post.
IT IS A DARN GOOD THING that the side cover was inplace my tower case. I was using a 24 inch stainless steel ruler and was turnning it over and it SLIPPED and went flying. I am just lucky that opening in the grill covering the fan were not large enpough for it to get into.

I would put a $100 bet on the fact that if that thing had gotten into the internals of this thing I would not be writing this reply. Because of two possible problems. It could have cracked the circuit board and/or caused a short circuit.

Nancy is asking to play Cribbage which is a request that I cannot refuse. So I will say Good Night.

    Is that really safe? :D

I agree that it's not a good, long-term idea because of the danger of shock but your huge drop in temps with the cover off tells me that you could probably improve the cooling of your case a bit.

    :D No. Not really. :)
But is sure is a lot of fun. We just sit here during evenings and enjoy each others company and have fun.
But it is good that her back is toward me at times. Especially when I am ahead and the at the last hand or two she takes over :(
Sometime I even feel like going over and shutting her machine off. ( then run like U no what )
We spend fun many hours playing games via our LAN.
