Computer was turned off one evening and when turned on next day computer would load to black screen after windows start-up logo appears. Computer is running but nothing displays. I am able to start up in safe mode. If VGA driver is uninstalled or disabled then computer will start up normally. I have tried downloading and installing the latest VGA driver but once the computer goes through the installation process the screen goes black again. I am using NVIDEA GeForce 7600GS. Don't know if this is relevant but the power supply was replaced a couple of weeks ago (from 350w to 550w).

I would welcome any feedback. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

In Safe Mode, go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall the listing(s) for the nVidia graphics (check there are no previous graphics listed). Go to Device Manager and check for Display Adapter, uninstall any listing there.

When you reboot, the Add New Hardware wizard will run. If you can direct the wizard to the original drivers CD, you can do so, otherwise click Cancel. Run the the drivers installation program when you get to the desktop (the original drivers CD will probably be best). In the Startup Options menu (where you select Safe Mode) you can select VGA mode, you can use this for installing the new drivers.

If you still find problems, you may need to look for updates for the motherboard chipset drivers. You will find these at the manufacturer of the motherboard or the computer if it a branded system (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc). For Intel chipsets they are called "INF Updates ".
[I always update the chipset drivers before the graphics.]

If you want updates for the graphics drivers, I suggest you go to the manufacturer of the graphics (nVidia only supply the chipset for the graphics) and use the driver version that they recommend.

    Matt
