Lets try something. Please download HostsXpert.
    1. Unzip HostsXpert.zip to it's own folder.
    2. Open the folder and double click on HostsXpert.exe
    3. Then click on "Restore Original Hosts" to restore your Hosts file to its default condition.
    4. Close program when complete.

Close all browser windows then re-open and see if the problem persists.

Is the current HOSTS file already Read Only? Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and right click the HOSTS file then select properties. If the Read Only attribute box is selected, de-select it and click OK. Try restoring the original agin with the HostsXpert.

    Done

Done, will let you know if this fixes the problem, if so, I will replicate on my desktop at home. One question though, should I make it "read only" again?

    Volume

Oddly enough, i noticed a few days ago that my volume icon is gone from the task bar. Under control panel it is checked to be there, i actually went ahead, unchecked, applied, re-checked, applied and nothing happened.

I'll have to check into the volume icon issue.

I do believe the back button behavior you're experiencing is due to the mvps hosts file. Have a look at the following link.

    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm#Button

If you click the drop down arrow next to the Back button on a page you know will try to load an adserver if you click Back, does it contain one or more URLs to said adserver, as in the image at the above link? If so, that would be why one click of the Back button tries to load an ad. What happens if you click twice very quickly?

I'd like to see what all hosts files you curently have, backups and all. Please highlight and copy the bolded text below.

    dir %Systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc > "%userprofile%\desktop\seehosts.txt "

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Right click in the command window and select paste, then hit enter. Close the window.

Open seehosts.txt on the desktop and post it's contents here.

    Yes

Yes, I do have the problems mentioned in the link. Sometime it is as many as 3 in the back button list, sometimes as few as 1, and even a few times with 0 and the back button works. Its a real annoyance. Here is the requested log:

    More on Volume

Not only is the volume icon gone off the taskbar, but I cannot get sound from any web pages. I can play CD's and general windows programs make sounds, including testing them via control panel, but i just tried to bring up sirius.com and nothing...

Did you try the tip shown there?

Since you have restored the original MS HOSTS file, I'm not sure why you're still experiencing the behavior. Recommend you delete the following hosts files, then see if the behavior persists when you open a new browser.

    hosts.20071010-102225.backup
    hosts.20071107-151448.backup
    hosts.20071119-165829.backup
    hosts.20071124-104132.backup
    hosts.20071130-141018.backup
    hosts.bak
    HOSTS.MVP

    Volume

Ok, in the process of clearing all the problems up, the volume icon disappeared from my task bar. I have gone through control panel, unchecked, applied, checked applied, OK to try and make it re-appear to no avail. I can here CD's if I play them or any WMV files send my way, however, I cannot hear sound if it is part of a web page (i.e. video, music, etc..).

Click Tools from your IE Browser's menu, then select Internet Options. Select the Advanced tab. Scroll down and verify 'Play sounds in web pages' is selected. If it is already checked, uncheck it>apply and OK out, then go back and check it>apply and OK out.

What's the current situation with the Back button?
