I will explain this the best way I can so bare with me lol. I am having problems with my Kodak Camera (C703). The camera worked on my desktop (which is now gone -- gave it to nephew) and it worked on my laptop; however, now I cannot get my pictures to transfer. I think the problem is the cable but...I also think Kodak is stalling because in about a week my warranty will be expired!

Anyway...I have called Kodak for help; they 'stink' as far as helping people. I cannot tell you how many emails I have sent them stating that the last suggestion did not work and I cannot tell you how many times they have repeated the steps in continuing emails - even as I sent each email without deleting any thing in the reply (such as the "tail ") therefore they should have known the things I have tried and the things that did not work.

I called them twice; first receiving the idea that I need to delete a certain registry entry and the second, confirming that I need to delete that registry and to contact the computer company - which is Toshiba. I contacted Toshiba and they basically told me they could not help me. The Toshiba representative informed me if this registry entry was written by a software company then they would not be able to help me delete it; again calling Kodak - another phone call worth nothing!

I was then informed to call Microsoft; ending again with no help. I have checked in many forums, all having the same suggestions - I receive a message telling me several different things but most of all; "Access is Denied" and "error deleting key." I guess I should mention that my original message was "Windows does not recognize the device. "

My camera works and the light flashes green when I have it connected to my computer; which Kodak represented that this was what is supposed to happen. I was told that the computer knows there is something hooked up but is not sure what. (But again, not too sure I trust Kodak or these other representatives for that matter! :( )

I have been working on this for over 4 weeks; there are other things I can do...I know I can buy a memory card adapter and download my pictures that way or I can go to a place such as Wal-Mart and pay $7.99 for a disk -- which my card only has 200 pictures until the card is full so this would mean $7.99 for every 200 pictures when I know my own disk fits over 700 -- sort-of defeats part of my reason for the purchase of this camera (which let me mention has been less than a year!)

I am not really sure what information is needed to HOPEFULLY solve this problem but whatever information please let me know and I'd be more than happy to let you know --- I am at my witts end, not to mention I am about to throw my camera, pick it up and throw it again, and again, and again....

I have always found that Kodak's software is buggy. Whenever I wanted to retrieve the pictures from any of my cameras with a XP PC I would use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Vista has changed that. See below.

    Windows Help and How-to

How do I get pictures from my camera to my computer?

    Registry reply

I do not even get a dialogue box; I did not mention too much about my error message but in the lower right hand corner I receive a bubble window stating "windows does not recognize the device" and something about the device is malfunctioning. I have downloaded several (3) registry cleaners but these cleaners will not clean the registry without purchase - Christmas time; I cannot purchase these.

It has also been suggested to recover my computer to factory but I'm not so sure I want to do that --- I might as a LAST resort.

    Thanks,
    Kerri

Could be possible TWO unrelated hardware problems.
Computer's USB interface has issues. I have never used Vista, will need other posters to guide you.
The USB port on camera and/or USB cable is bad. Attach camera to a different computer, if no go, swap out USB cable. If no go, camera USB port is bad.

    Hello brohdaw,

Some things to try if no go after Dennis's sequence:

Have you installed KB916449 Vista Performance update? One area this update addresses is USB issues.

Another - uinstall the USB controllers/root hubs in DM:

From start > right click Computer > properties > under Tasks > Device Manager. Expand USB and right click and uninstall the contollers and Root Hubs > reboot - Vista will re detect what was uninstalled.

Before either installing the MS Update or uninstalling in DM, create a manual System Restore point - type System Restore into the Start button's search area and follow the dialogs.

Best bet is to buy ine of those multi-card readers. I paid about 10 bucks for my reader, it reads 13 different card types. The readers are much faster than the camera, don't depend on 3rd party drivers and software, and are safer in that less chance of the card contents getting corrupted.

I agree with TonyT - use a card reader and copy the image files from the card - which will appear as a drive in Explorer - to a location of your choice. Check them out then format the card in the camera.

Although I have top line Canon DSLR's I never use the transfer software supplied by Canon. Sure it works, but is long winded and slow compared to direct transfer from the card reader.

    I hate Vista!

If anything, I sure hope it is the cable; I only got the camera last December! Thanks for your help

I am late but I wanted to check these replies real quick lol. I was wondering if I deleted the USB roots (and controllers) if they would be added again by restarting the computer; I am not that technical with computers --- sure wish I would have followed that idea of taking computer classes years ago. I do okay but...I only know what I have taught myself, nothing "official."

I will definitely try these steps when I get home and get back to you with an update. Thanks! - I will try just about anything...I checked last night to make sure I had the disks that came with my laptop :p

I'm shopping for my boys today and I will look for one; the cheapest I could find was about $30 but it sure would not kill me to try one if I can find one for $10. I did not even know these existed; my 19 year old nephew had to tell me about them  Thanks!

I forgot to ask Tony but...What about the pictures I already have on the card? Will I be able to transfer those? (Wish I knew this answer now because I could put them on CD while I'm out today.) Second, what about editing software if I use a card reader? I like the software for editing reasons. I do a lot of different things with pictures - to make scrapbooks, videos, pictures, etc...

    Thanks.

    Yes
No reason why you should not continue to use it once the files are on your hard drive.

    Thanks!

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the help (and FAST too!!) I did buy a card reader and I found one for $10!!! Awesome, thank you...thank you..thank you...I am still going to see if I can find a fix for the kodak software (probably the cable) but at least now it is something that can wait, no longer frustrating me, and is not as much of an "emergency."

Again, thanks for all your help!!! I apologize for taking so long to "come back" but I am sure, as you all know "Tis the season to be busy, busy, busy." ;)

Thanks for the update - I would tend to stick with the direct transfer from card to computer using the reader.
