On my XP machine I click on Start->Run and type \\192.168.0.2\Shared to get to files on One of the servers.

This no workee on either of my Vista Machines...It appears to be a UserName/Password issue according to the error that pops up? (logon unsuccessful)

I type in the username: sjones
When it errors out, it auto fills in the username: Stevev-Vista\sjones (stevev-vista is the Machine name)

I've turned off Vista's firewall and no joy...HELP!

Below are screen shots of the working XP machine and the Vista machine..Looks weird/different that Vista doesn't show Workgroups.

I wish they'd fix the bugs in the old systems rather than working so hard to introduce new ones. Networking should be simple!!!!

What do you get if you do nslookup server_name?

I'll try nslookup server_name in a couple of hours when I get to the office.

Am also going to change the workgroup name on the Vista machine to match the Win 2003 Enterprise machine...Doing this if it works will break my SQL app, but I can reinstall it...But all XP machines in a few different workgroups can connect fine....

If you've got 2003 server, why are you using workgroups? AD and domain provide much more reliable networking than peer to peer workgroups. It's how Windows systems want to be set up.

A whopping seven users and three server machines. (two Win 2003 and one Linux I think)

Workgroups are still manageable then. If you had twenty PCs the move to domain would make much more sense.

How are the IP addresses set up (static or dynamic via DHCP)? Are you running WINS on any of the servers?

    Oh! worth pointing out:

In peer to peer, you need a user account set up on every PC you want to access. So you will need an sjones account on each PC. Those accounts are all different and will have different SIDs even though they have the same names.

So on PC1 to connect to PC2 you will need to set the user name to:

    PC2\sjones

When on PC2 you'll need to use:

    PC1\sjones

    to connect to PC1.

Unfortuantly, this I don't know..But, I'd guess each server has a Static IP...

The One I'm having troubles with 192.168.0.2 (i can find out the extrenal 209.xx address) - it also hosts download files for our web site...I can ping the machine OK...For what its worth....If I go to our web site to download a file like one of my clients (customers) would do I can't get the file...I have to change the IP from 209.xx.xx.xx to the local 192 address....

I do have "some sort" of user/permissions setup on the dot 2 machine. When I do Start->Run \\192.168.0.2\shared from Any XP machine, it takes my user name/passsword A-OK. I have different user names on all of the XP machine. (steve1, stevev etc)

The other Win 2003 machine is 192.168.0.3 and I can access it A-OK from my Vista machine....I can do \\192.168.0.3 from the run box have get to the same limited amount of folders on that machine. I can also remote desktop to it..I can also FPT to it....

    THANKS for all the help;)

Many firewall systems will not give you full functionality via an external IP address when you are inside the network, so you not getting full access to the extrenal 209.xx address doesn't raise alarm bells for me.

FYI, I've just written some instructions on join a PC to a domain in another thread if you want to see the process:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=374878&postcount=4

If I was in your situation, I'd move the PCs over to the domain. Have you considered having a play with Virtual PC and some test virtual XP and Vista instances to see how it works?

I will be using VirtPC on this new machine...It's on a long list of things I still need to install...But, one would think there's a setting in Vista ....

    Another thing I found yesterday...

From the working XP machine I can ping by name and IP.

On the Vista machine, I can only ping by IP??

That sounds like NetBIOS isn't working. Perhaps its not enabled by default with Vista.

I'll look into that....NetBIOS isn't in the normal spot like you'd find in XP...

Also FYI - I sent an email to my contact at M$....Who knows, I might get lucky and get a response;)

    Thanks for all your help.

Microsoft are trying to drop NetBIOS in favour of DNS (NetBIOS is great on small networks - less the 200 seats - but doesn't scale well and therefore isn't so good on the big corporate network Microsoft design Windows to work on), so I'm not surprised that Vista is even more DNS centric than XP.

Do you know if you are running a DNS service on one of your 2003 servers?

    I think we're running DNS?????

In TCP/IP properties, instead of doing "auto obtain IP Address" I'm using specific info due to having a custom VNC viewer app to conect with my customers....

From looking through the knowledge base, I saw an article about "helping" Vista with Name Resolution issues. It talked about adding server IP info to the HOST file????? I added the 192 address but no joy.

This article kind of looks like my delima:

You cannot access a network share on a Unisys MCP server from a Windows Vista-based computer by typing a UNC path that does not include the share name

I fired up VirtualPC on my working XP machine. Neither virtual XP or Win2k can connect to the server either:(

I don't know what to suggest next. I wish I lived in Texas, as I'd pop round and have a look.
