    Hello,
I'm having a problem with a dell Inspiron laptop that seems to have a loose ac port. If I hold the plug in, it will boot and start up. As soon as I let go of the plug, it shuts off. I've read that a port replicator or docking station will take care of this problem. If I do that, will it be a work around or will I still have to take this thing apart and repair the broken port? If I still have to fix it, then I don't see any reason to buy a replicator. Also, will a replicator or docking station charge the battery?
    Thanks in advance.

This is a real common problem with notebooks..Sometimes the ac connector and can be fixed - other times you have to replace the whole mobo.

Ditto on the common problem ...... Most specialized laptop repair depots can re-solder the adapter or replace the adapter (most are soldered directly to the motherboard) but its not for the do-it-yourselfer because its easy to burn the traces on the board.

Can't answer for all, but my Sony Viao port replicator has a different A/C adapter connection plug in port dooma-thingy whatchama-callit which is independent of the machine itself. I'd suggest you look specifically at the port replicator you are considering unless you are feeling lucky today.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the quick response. I hope I can fix it, I really don't want to buy a new board, it's not that old.

    Hi rockster, thanks for responding.

Ruining the board is what worries me. That's why I was looking for a port replicator. I'm not looking at anything specific and I'm not feeling lucky. If you have any suggestions on one I would very much appreciate it. It's an Inspiron 1150 if that helps you.
