Well, out of nowhere, my connection changed to "limited or no connectivity." I'm running Windows XP on the particular desktop. I have a laptop also connected to the router and the connection is fine on it. I have ensured that there are no problems with the modem, router, or cables. After trying every other possible solution I could find, I replaced the PCI card today, with no improvement.

When I run ipconfig on the desktop, it gives me an IP address beginning with 169. When I try to release and renew, it tells me its unable to contact the DHCP server. I have made sure there are no firewalls or anti-virus/spyware running. Things I have tried (all unsuccessfully:()

    1: Releasing and renewing IP
2: Powering down and disconnecting then reconnecting modem and router
3: Made sure DHCP and DNS clients are both automatic and started
    4: Tried the netsh command
    5: Ran winsock xp fix
6: Tested router, modem, cables, ISP (all in working order)
    7: Replaced PCI card
8: Manually entered IP address and DNS

Here are the ipconfig /all logs:

ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated. I feel as though I've searched and searched the web and tried every suggestion I could find and I'm at a loss. I'm not an expert but I know my way around a computer pretty well I'd say. Still, please tell me how to do things (unless its pretty simple) rather than just what to do. Thank you very much for your time guys.

Did you try a different port on the router?

You said the cables are fine. How did you verify that?

Yes, I tried different ports. I removed the wireless card from the laptop and connected it with the cable to test them and it worked fine.

You don't need the DNS Client Service, you can set it to Stopped & Manual.
You DO need these Services for DHCP networking:
    DHCP Client
    Network Connections
    Network Location Awareness

Does that mean you tried using a static ip address?
If so, to use a static ip address you then need to:
disable the DHCP Client Service and
use a static ip that conforms with your router ip range:
    .....if router = 192.168.1
.....then comp static ip should be 192.168.1.x
.....and Preferred DNS server should be 192.168.1.1
Also, some router reserve a block of addresses for static and dhcp, ie Linksys routers allow 192.168.1.2-99 for static and 192.168.1.100-253 for dhcp, thus if use a static ip it needs to be set to an address within 192.168.1.2-99.

Also, the router maintains a log file of dhcp clients. Check the router for the dhcp clients table and delete all clients in the list EXCEPT the comps that DO get dhcp addresses successfully.

Also, have you tries using the reset button the router and starting from scratch.
    To do so:
    shutdown comp.
    power down the modem.
reset the router (clears logs, tables, loads defaults)
    power down router.
power up modem & wait unti synched.
power up router and wait until sysnches w/ modem.
    power up comp.

I followed your directions on the static IP, still no luck.

I couldn't find the DHCP logs when I logged into the router. However, I did notice that the desktop IP is showing up under 'Attached Devices'. I'm not sure if that means anything, just thought it strange since they seem to not be communicating.

    I also reset the router.

When I have the IP & DNS manually configured, it shows that the network is connected but I still cannot access the internet or router.

I really appreciate all the help, if we can't get this figured out I can take it to a repair shop. Just thought I would give this a shot first.

Well, although I feel like a complete idiot, I have finally found the problem and gotten it to work.

I looked up every process that was running and discovered that, although I had turned off and disabled the antivirus and firewall, part of it was still running. I tried to end the process, and it said something like Access Denied. The only way I could get it to stop was to completely uninstall both of them.

What I had was Webroot Antivirus/Spysweeper and Webroot Desktop Firewall installed. It really grinds my gears because I made absolutely sure that I turned off every aspect of it. I don't really understand because everything worked fine with it for 3 weeks, so I assumed it was unrelated.

I really appreciate the help, I will definitely recommend this site to others.

Glad you solved it. Sometimes arriving at a working solution requires that one "spill his mind" to others first so as to bring the real solution to the forefront. I do it all the time.
