I have an excel 2003 workbook on a server at work which when opened it comes up with the error: <File Name> is locked for editing
    by '<User Name>'.

The person listed did not have the file open so i created a copy of the workbook with a new name so we could keep using the woorkbook. The new file opened once and then the next time it opened the same error occured with my name as holding the file open even though i didn't have it open.

I read on microsofts website that having the file not as deep in folders on the server would fix the problem but it occurs nomatter where i create a copy of the file. The file always opens once before locking up.

Help would be much appreciated as i spent alot of time creating this workbook and i don't want to have to do it again.

Is the workstation set to AutoDisconnect? This is something that XP is capable of.

In the Registry take a look at the autodisconnect value at:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

If it is set to zero(0) then that could explain the problem. Zero doesn't turn it off - it sets it to disconnect in a matter of seconds

The default is f (in Hex), which is 15 minutes.

What this setting does is it autodisconnects the network after the network has been idle for the duration of the autodisconnect value.

Intel suggest setting this to 8,171 years, which I think is stupid & asking for potential problems, but in your case I'd try setting it to 12 or 24 hours (2d0 or 5a0).

What may be happening is that the workstation is getting disconnected, in which case Excel is unable to delete the temp file called the "Owner file ". This temp file is stored in the same location as the document and holds the user info for the person that has the document open.

It was set to the defult value. I've changed the value to 12 hours and made a copy of the workbook and the new copy appears to be working perfectly.

I don't know much about the registry as i've never really looked at it before, willl that value stay set to 12 hours no mater who is logged onto the machine?

Also in my attempts to work out the problem I have ended up with multiple copies of the woorkbook. How can I get rid of these as excel still thinks people are holding them open.

    Cheers Andrew

Yes, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE settings apply for the whole machine.
