I see nothing in the event logs you sent except that the security center service has started

Save and send the System events please.

Lets walk through this step by step again. Please complete the following with UAC disabled, so we know that it is not interfering.

Double click the wscsvc registry backup you made and allow it to merge with the registry. Reboot.

Now open the Services console and double click the Security Center entry, select the Log On tab. Local System account should be selected as the log on type. Select This Account and click Browse. Type Local then click Check Names. Local Service should populate ........ click OK. Make sure to blank the Password field and Confirm Password field using backspace and/or delete (spacebar counts as a character and we want no password). Click Apply. You should get a message that NT Authority\LocalService has been granted permission (but don't sweat it if you don't). Click OK and OK out of the properties dialog. Right click and Start the Security Center service.

    Hi Dave

When I go in to the services and select the security centre entry windows gives this warning

    “Configuration Manager.
The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present deviceâ€
When I click on OK it opens the entry setting it will then find local service and populate it to the entry box I have backspaced the password and confermation box.
However when I click on OK it comes up with the same box
    “Configuration Manager.
The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present deviceâ€
It then puts the passwords back in when you OK this message.

    What do you think

    Terry

    Hi Dave good news

I think we\YOU have it sorted

As I stated earlier when I went into the Service Console the error message came up every time I clicked on the Security Centre entry, and when I tried to apply the changes to Local Service as you asked.

On checking the status of Security Centre in the Service console it stated that it was STOPPED so I clicked on the START button, again the error came up.

Now looking at your last post, I thought that you seem sure it should start here under Local Service.
So I kept on trying and in the end the Security Centre entry said STARTED, so I clicked on OK and checked in Control Panel if it had indeed started, to my surprise it had.

I then rebooted the Laptop and checked in Control Panel if Security Centre had started automatically and it had not started up.

I went back in to the Service Console and turned it back on it took about 3 goes at it and in the end it started up “giving the same error message as before” but stating STARTED in the status.

Going back into Control Panel Security Centre had started, I then remembered you asking about the UAC so I went and turned UAC off , as I could at last get to it restarted the laptop and “Ta-Da” it had started security centre on its own.

I have now turned UAC back on and the Laptop seems fine.

What now other than me thanking you for all the help and assistance you have given me.

it is now 00.20 uk time good night

    Terry

    Hi Terry,

I read your message about the configuration manager message just before leaving for a long road trip, from which I've just gotten in. I was prepared to log on and tell you that UAC can be enabled/disabled via msconfig, when I see that you've already got it sorted out. That's great! :)

I'm going to review this topic tomorrow after work to see what else needs done to finish up, but I think we're done, short of some tidying up. Let me know how things are working and if there are any other issues to address.

    Have a good night's rest. ;)

    Hi Dave

all is well with the laptop "no notepad popup , no web pages opening on there own and a full set of Security running even with the UAC turned on.

The Norton 360 has also gone!!!!!!

do we need to tidy any thing up?

    Hi Terry,

Click Start>Run and type ComboFix /u then hit enter. That will remove all of the ComboFix created folders and backups, as well as ComboFix.exe

You can delete the reg fix(es), batch file and logs we created. Empty the recycle bin when done.

You should also clear your System Restore points and create a new one. That is accomplished by disabling System Restore, then re-enabling it. There's a good guide for that here.

That should be a wrap! :)
