    Hi everyone,

I just bought an Access Point to extend the wireless coverage in my parents' 3-story house. The main router/modem combo is a FritzBox, which is a product by AVM. I followed the instructions, and the lights are what they should be, it looks like.

What DOES work, however, is when I connected the router with the new Netgear AP with an Ethernet cable, I was able to connect to, and browse wirelessly through the Netgear AP. I was NOT connected to the FritzBox router/modem. I made sure of that.

So what's the deal here? I've configured the router to allow access for other WLAN products, and also entered the MAC address of the Netgear AP in the "Repeater" field. The encryption on the router is WPA, NOT WPA2. So far, I have left the Neatgear AP unencrypted. Is that the problem? Why does the Netgear AP allow for WEP, WPA2, but NOT WPA?

I can certainly change the router's encryption from WPA to WPA2 or WEP, if that's the issue.

What do you guys think the problem is? I really want to get this working ASAP, and so far, bottom line is: I CAN access the Internet WIRELESSLY through the Netgear AP, but only when it is connected to the router by way of Ethernet cable.

This was never an issue with my Linksys setup back home, but this "huge" store only carried Netgear. To order Linksys would have taken 8 weeks. EIGHT weeks? Man, am I homesick. lol...

    Thanks everybody...:)

    Thats correct.

An Access point is a wireless extension of a wired network. Meaning it just passes traffic through wirelessly that is managed by the Fritzbox. (Wired Router)

    Fritzbox-------->Ethernet--cable--->AP--->Wireless client.

Your asking that AP to be a wireless repeater which it will not do.

The only other way that AP will function is a wireless bridge.

    Wireless router---->WLAN<-------AP/Bridge--->Ethernet-->clientPC.

The only time I have seen devices work as wireless repeaters is if they are 2 identical APs in repeater mode.

Your best bet is to get an ethernet connection to your AP.

    Options would be:
    (1)Existing Cat5 run
    (2)Sharing a cat5 with a telephone. (pins 1,2,3,6 ethernet, and pins 4,5 phone)
(If the house has structured wiring you should be able to do one of those options.)
    (3) powerline Ethernet to the AP.

The netgear should be able to function as a repeater IF it has built in features for repeater mode. And if you then config it properly. What exact model netgear ap is it?

first try changing the channel from the default channel 6
rogue signals from other routers ( also set on default channel 6) can drift in long distances and interfere with internet connectivity
You will have a signal but no internet
Change the ssid as well even if it is to add a single digit
Make sure the router is high and uncluttered
Moving the router over even a foot may help as well
Channels 1 and 11 are first next picks

Hey folks, thanks for all the answers. Well, it says it can be run in repeater mode, and has WDS. Ethernet is not an option. If you saw this house, you'd know why.

It also has support through 802.11i, and 802.11e (QoS, WMM), supports wireless-bridging, and has the repeater mode. It also supports "wireless roaming ".

If this idiot store had only had Linksys, which I have back home, I'd be set. Salesperson goes: We don't have it in stock, but we can order it and call you in about 8 weeks ". EIGHT WEEKS??? The nonsense continued: "Well, Fritzbox is made by AVM, and we can have that here by Tuesday next week ". Next week, which meant 5 days, I thought, ok fine, order it. Next week arrives, and he actually calls for me to come in and pick it up. I drive to this "superstore" (there's nothing super about it), and find the same sales guy. He goes "Here it is ". I go "Here is what?!? ", as he is trying to hand me a SIEMENS repeater, which was 90 Euros, instead of the 50 Euros the AVM one would have been. I saw the price in his computer. Sick and tired of this bait and switch BS, I angrily get the Netgear AP, although I don't like Netgear.

I enabled additional WLAN devices in the Fritzbox router, punched in the MAC address, and that's where I am.

The exact model # is WG602GR.

Sorry about the rant, but ahhh, that felt good. You guys are great. This forum is great. Please help me set up this POS and I'll sign up as a premium member LOL...Now let me find a Xanax real quick. :D

Have you worked through this guide on the netgear site?

    http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101409.asp

visionof's point is probably valid - it is worth ensuring that the Channel/Frequency set at step one, is different to the channel used by the Fitzbox.

Personally, I think Netgear kit is better than Linksys kit. Getting wireless AP's to bridge is hard work no matter what kit you use.

Alright, I am making one more attempt to get this POS installed WIRELESSLY! I just described the situation on a really good German website. I linked this thread to them, and I am now linking this thread to them. It is in German, however

I bought this freaking thing 3 weeks ago, and left it alone, as every time I attempted to get it working, I want to take an ax to it and violently destroy it. HAHA...

Update: Currently I have it set up in a way that it is connected to the Fritzbox router by way of Ethernet cable and I am posting this message through the Netgear router. So that part works.

One more thing: The IP address of the router, 192.168.0.227 does not work, so I can't even secure the freaking thing with WPA or whatever. Why do you guys think that is???????????????

AGAIN, it CLEARLY states on the box of the Netgear AP that it can be run in REPEATER MODE!

I really want to get this over with. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is the link to the German website:

    :(

Nobody?? :( May I at least inquire as to why I cannot even access the router via its IP address even though it's connected to the router with an Ethernet cable? I can connect to it and get great speeds, etc., but it won't take 192.168.0.227.:rolleyes::(

That's an unusual address - presumable you set it manually. I expect the router isn't actually at that address. Have you tried the default address (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 - if the latter, you will have to manually change the IP address of your PC to a compatible address - such as 192.168.1.2), as it may have reverted back to the default.

Netgear is 192.168.2.1 out of the box.
