What's the Aspect Ratio you use on your computer's monitor?

Feel free to post comments on using different aspects.

An aspect ratio is the ratio between the horizontal dimension and the vertical dimension.

The more common resolutions having a 4:3 aspect ratio are: 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, and 1600x1200 pixels.

Resolution settings with a 5:4 aspect ratio are 1280x1024 pixels, and 1600x1280 pixels.

For widescreen LCD monitors, the aspect ratio is 16:10 (or sometimes 16:9) with resolutions of

    16:9
    • 1280×720

    16:10
    • 1280×800
    • 1440×900
    • 1680×1050
    • 1920×1200
    • 2560×1600

It was I who asked Arie to post this poll. I'm currently running 4:3 at 1024x768 but have started planning my next build with new peripherals. I lean towards 5:4, unless I get convinced that widescreen is a good thing for a non-gamer who doesn't even watch films other than occasionally (with an arm twisted behind my back ... ;) ... ).

4 x 3 on 3 flat screens and two laptops. Using 2 monitors daily so real estate is not a concern, but laptops have to be 4 x 3 to avoid problems when connected to digital projectors (part of screen missing on projected image - not helpful when demonstrating/tutoring Photoshop :)) I have no control over the projector spec - I don't own one - I just use other's :)

    3x Desktops

    5:4 - Two 19" running - 1280x1024
    4:3 - One 17" running - 800x600

    EDIT
Corrected - This time, brain and fingers participated.
My vote, since restricted to 1 flavor should be moved to 5:4
Sorry Arie, it was a very long weekend.

1280x1024 is my preferred ratio at the moment. I have a 19" CRT at work and a 19" LCD at home that both support this ratio. My laptop has a 15" screen and runs at 1024x768.

For me height is more important than width. I tend to write code and documents, and I want to see as many lines in one view as I can. My main application (that needs lots of screen space) is a variation of Eclipse that I use to edit Ruby on Rails applications.

Therefore, I don't like the current trend towards wide screens, unless the screen is so big that I can get a couple of big documents side by side. I have to admit to being tempted by some 22" screens that will support 1680×1050 - similar height to my current systems, with extra width - useful when comparing documents.

Think two monitors beat a wide screen when progroamming. Used to use one for the debugger and the other to watch the program single step. Now prefer 4:3 for increased text size, ageing eyes. :D

Yup! a lot of my programming friends prefer the two monitor option. However, with two monitors height is even more important. What's the point of two wide-screen monitors!

My worry is that wide-screen monitors are getting pushed so hard that it won't be long until you won't be able to buy 4:3 or 5:4 screens (or they will become an expensive option). Look at the way TV has gone.

Many flatscreens can be used in portrait mode - bags of height - enough width?

Yea, and I thought it would help since I posted the relation between screen resolution & aspect ratio.

Maybe we should re-visit this, and post a poll for people to report their screen resolution

My Iiyama LCD at home will do that. However, you have to use some software to make Windows use the unusual resulting aspect ratio, and the result ain't pretty. OK for occasional use, but not as a full time option.

I got a new 22" LCD WS as a present (yeah, yeah, lucky me :)). I previously used a 17" CRT at 1024 X 768. The native resolution of this LCD is 1680 X 1050, but I find myself leaning towards the screen to see some text occasionally (eyes are not bad, but not great).

    [I have just discovered 1440 X 900, which I will test]

Outside the native resolution the monitor, lines are a little fuzzy around the edges.

Maybe I have the screen set back too far on the desk. One day we should have 3D screens or "virtual reality "...youch! :p

I could run CRT screens on 16 bit colour without any apparent degradation of the interface, 16 bit on this screen exposes "blocks" of colour. Note that it is still well within the capabilities of my graphics adapter.

I have yet to run any graphics dependent programs on this system ( "big" games). I should try and see how they perform.

Sitting on the desk, I am mainly looking down at the screen, I would like it more at natural eye level.

I would like...a 22" WS CRT, but it might collapse the desk :D

    Matt
Arie, try not set me off on any more ravings :D

1152 x 864 on my main monitors - pair of Samsung 204Ts - one on a KVM shared by two machines and the other is dedicated to one machine. 1024 x 768 on my server. 1024 x 768 on one laptop and the other is a widescreen which I'm too lazy to check out and too forgetful to remember.

Was originally going to use the 204T's with a DVI KVM switch to give me dual monitors but SLI doesn't support dual monitors without a significant frame rate penalty. Even tried a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go setup and again - slow SLI frame rates. Temporarily moth balled a pair of 17" NEC LCD's that were running in dual monitor setup and still have two 21" Nokia CRTs that are also in storage.

Would like to get some more use out of all of the above but it isn't going to happen until I change video cards out or do a new personal build and sell one of my own machines. Both of my SLI setups are using overclocked 7600's with copper zahlmans.

When does the poll come out on fixed base and plunge routers? :D

    ;)
