I am an Australian in the UK. I am staying with friends and accessing the Internet via their Internet connection

I am using Outlook Express to receive, send and archive my emails.

My Outlook Express emails arrive via my Australian server (Chariot) and Yahoo Plus. I.e. When I open Outlook Express, "Tools ", "Accounts ", it shows that I have two Internet accounts, Yahoo Plus and Chariot in Australia. (I managed to set this up and import and export emails from Yahoo Plus and Chariot through a process of trial and error before I left Australia).

I seem to be receiving emails through Outlook Express fairly quickly but when I go to send emails Outlook Express won't connect immediately with either Yahoo or Chariot.I get the error messages (cut and pasted directly into to this post):

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E "

    OR

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Mail Account', Server: 'mail.vic.chariot.net.au', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, S//ecure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E "

The emails do eventually get sent, but it can take quite a while, sometimes hours, for them move from the Outlook Express "Outbox" to the "Sent Items ".

I tried setting up Microsoft Office Express to get around this problem but it was a disaster. When I tried to import and export from Yahoo Plus it took forever and I ended up with two or three copies of the same emails. Now I can't work out how to get rid of the darn programme! (I've done all the usual things through the Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs ")

Can anyone please tell me why I'm having these problems and how to fix them?:D

    Thanks

    Peter Lovell

Your SMTP (outgoing mail server) could be blocked. Here is how to test it:

    • Go to Start > Run, type cmd, click OK
    • At the Command prompt type: telnet mail.vic.chariot.net.au 25

Wait a few seconds. You should see the following: 220 mail05.chariot.net.au ESMTP. This means that it is not blocked.

If you do not see this message, your SMTP is being blocked. This is normal practice for many IPS's that will only allow you to use their local SMTP server.

Question [Can't send email: Error Number: 0x800CCC0E]

    Thanks Arie!

I tried as you suggested, there was no reply, so the Chariot SMTP seems to be blocked. The question is why do the emails end up getting through in the end?

Also why is exactly the same thing happening with Yahoo Plus?

I must stick with Outlook Express (or something like it) so I can keep copies of all my emails on my hard disk for archiving. Can you suggest a solution or will I have to battle on regardless?

    Kindest Regards

    Peter

Most ISP's don't allow the sending of emails from one ISP through another..

You can change your SMTP account info to match that of the ISP you're currently using.

Because it is the current ISP that you are connected to that is doing the blocking.
