I am confused by all the new processor's out there. It used to be easy, 8086, 80286, 386 ...
I think is is time for me to upgrade and I am looking for a list of processors by processing power.

Pentium, Centrino, Celeron, Core 2, Athlon, Sempron, AM2, Dual-Core, Xeon ????
    What do they all mean?
Which is the best AMD or Intel.
If I know what the order of power is I can check my wallet and work my way from the top down to what is in it.

Is there something on the net that you have seen that would help?

Here is the system I am using now

Are you on a limited budget? Do you want "top notch" or optimize price/performance?

Yesterday, I ordered the components for one of the latter for my friends son (12 years old part time gamer). It is based on AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ (basically the same as the FX-62 but a 89W design rather than a 125W design). In terms of price/performance, an AMD system with that processor seems to be at the sweet spot. The 6000+ and 6400+ are 125W designs (like the FX-62) as opposed to the 5600+ which should run cooler. Those two are slightly more expensive which means that an Intel system based on the E6750/E6850 start getting competitive, especially since they offer better performance (the E6550 is comparable to the 5600+ but more expensive).

My shopping list looks like this:

    Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe (motherboard)
    Asus EN-8800GT/G/HTDP/512M (video card)
    Asus WL-138G (wireless PCI adapter)
    AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ (processor)
    Kingston KVR800D2N5K2/2G (2x1024 MB RAM)
500 GB Hitachi T7K500 SATA 3.0 (hard disk)
    Samsung SH-S203B (DVD-burner)
    3½" Sony (floppy drive)
    Antec Sonata III 500 W

To compare AMD processors, visit Find and Compare Desktop Processor Specifications

To compare Intel processors, visit Intel® Desktop Processor Comparison Chart

The CPU charts 2007 over at Tom's Hardware might be of use.

Salty, one thing to keep in mind that can cut down on the amount of "overwhelm" when deciding on a new cpu is to take into consideration things such as:

    - Intel continues to kick AMD's butt and IMHO, is still a wiser decision for a new cpu purchase.

    - what your budget is.

Those factors along with "bang for your buck "-ness left me with a pretty easy choice of an Intel E2180 or an E4300. Based on my budget and knowing I'd be better off with Intel removed many, many cpus from my buying decision.

I've used nothing but AMD since I started this hobby but finally switched to Intel and it was a very wise decision. I'm hoping that AMD comes out with some hot new cpus very soon to help juice up the competition with Intel.

This looks like what I am looking for. Thanks Christer

I too was a died in the wool AMD user for a long time. I am using my first Intel processor now.

Over at Tom's Hardware the 5600+ beats the E4300 in every benchmark but one. At NewEgg, the price is approximately the same, $140 for the 5600+ and $130 for the E4300 but the difference in performance is much more to the advantage of the 5600+. For a budget build, why would I choose the E4300? Overclocking?

There was no E2180 at Tom's Hardware to compare but it's cheap ($90).

    From my own post:
Well, I had a feeling of "déjà vu" when I asked that question. We already had that discussion in Incredible bang for buck - Intel E21xx cpus!.
