When I open IE7, I'm getting a dialog box with the message:
    Stack Overflow at Line: 77

This just started a couple of weeks ago; I don't recall what I was doing when it started. I've searched for possible solutions and am getting nowhere. I've run TuneUp Utilities on the Registry.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2 on a Dell Latitude 610 notebook.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

dearnold - Welcome to the Board :)

I would start troubleshooting by disabling all Add-ons (Tools > Manage Add-ons) and if that solves your problem enable them one by one until the culprit is found.

Thanks for the reply. I disabled all Add-ons as you suggested; the problem still exists.

However, I've now discovered that it only seems to happen when I have www.cnn.com set as my home page. I tried several other sites as the default home page and, voila, no error message.

When I go to cnn.com, the message pops up just before the Pop-Up Blocker bar shows up. However, if I allow pop-ups on this site, I still get the error message.

Before you rush to the obvious conclusion that I should avoid cnn.com, please note that this is my default home page on several other computers and only the notebook has started throwing this error.

Any other suggestions? I'd really like to clear this error. THX - Dianne

I don't think I can offer an immediate solution on this. Extensive Googling has not come up with a single specific cause.

Bugs in software are suggested and interaction with other software, particularly security software.

One suggestion would be to roll back to IE 6 through Add/Remove Programs > Windows Internet Explorer 7 > Remove and see if the problem is resolved and then to re-install IE 7.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess the good news ( :) for me) is that you didn't find anything by googling that I hadn't already seen and tried. The "bad news" is that uninstalling IE7 and reverting to IE6 didn't help.
I re-installed IE7 -- restarting inbetween, of course. Same error message at the cnn.com site under both IE6 and IE7 on just this computer.

This problem isn't mission critical; just continuously frustrating. I'd like to fix it. Have emailed Microsoft just to be "on the record ".

Appreciate your effort........and I do like your description of your computer experience level!! May have to adopt that one myself.

FYI - a description of Stack Overflow :)

You may need to compare te setup and installed software on the laptop with your other computers which do not suffer the problem.

I would look at differences in the security software installed and would go so far as to suggest that you disconnect the laptop from the network, if any and the Internet, clean boot it and see if the problem still occurs. Provided that you do not have IE 7 set up to empty Temp Internet Files on close (preferred) the home page should be cached.

    Stack overflow

Thanks for the suggestions! The Wiki entry on Stack Overflow was actually pretty funny for me -- I had little clue what to do with any of the information -- and I think that was your point. :D This is one of those errors that is really difficult to track down.

However, I have finally solved the problem. It isn't clear just what did it, but I uninstalled IE7 again (so I was back to IE6 with the error still appearing). I downloaded a utility called CCleaner which I had read about and which my son uses on some of his "sticky" problems. Ran CCleaner through it's paces -- deleting lots of extraneous files and cookies and letting it "clean" the registry (properly backing it up, of course).

That did it; IE7 is now installed again and updated and the error has not re-appeared. Also, in the process, I updated Firefox and used that for several days. The error never appeared while using Firefox.

Another one of those "mysteries of MS ", I think. Thanks for your suggestions along the way.
