    Hello:

After unsuccessfully trying to make scanner work
i now get this message at Start-up
'Windows cannot find 'D:\CDSETUP.EXE',Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. To search for a file,Click Start, then click Search "
i close it and a second message appears roughly stating a reference to it must be removed from registry "
Please advise how to do this, i know how to get into registry, but ubsure wher to look for this

    Hello Mirr11,

That's the Scanner configuration files/setup reference in the registry.

Give the MS cleanup tool a try http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

In the Dialog box, highlight that line only and the tool will remove the registry references.

Also go into msconfig and see if the item is there, and if so, disable by unchecking the item.

you said "go into msconfig and see if the item is there, and if so, disable by unchecking the item. "
I did that, now i get a message about making change and System Restore(which doesn't work)]

I am very tired of these stupid/strange messages from MSFT
and you wonder why i swore my next will be a Mac/Apple, and i get support at an Apple supported forum, or my oldest son

Try Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel, which is more complete than msconfig.

M$, as are all program developers, is trying to add artificial intelligence to its software, and, just like everyone else, finding AI is not up to the job yet. But all progtammers keep trying, and sooner or later someone. may succede. Patience is called for. When it's finally available, it'll be worth the problems it now causes.

Save it to a place where you have your other program setup install files.

Then double click on the zip folder and you'll see StartupCPL.exe. This is the setup file execute - the installer, follow the instructions to install.

Yes, just my observation. That's why so many windows OS messages sound "intelligent" but are useless, and should be ignored.

The system is letting you know that the startup configuration has been changed. check the box to not get the message anymore - until the next time :)

If SR doesn't work, you may have a corrupt restore point somewhere in the chain of linked restore points. Disable SR and that'll clear them out - then re enable and the system will establish an initial restore point.

Right click MY Computer > properties > SR tab > check "Turn off System Restore...." > reboot and uncheck to turn SR on again.

I can not ignore it when it shows up when i boot-up and when shutting down.
I got rid of it (i hope)

to Charlesvar: SR did not work 6 months ago. i will leave it off and not get "another strange message" (i hope)

I think you're ignoring a feature that has saved inumerable users from having to reinstall windows. Like all things, not perfect, but the answer to that is to attempt to understand and take control of it.

If you hate XP, you would absolutely loathe Vista :)
