Hello lovesleo and welcome to the Board,

I'm assuming this is a 3rd party Screensaver.

What Vista version are you running?

See what DirectX version is installed: type run into the search area above the start button> click on Run > type dxdiag > ok.

In the window that appears in the first tab - System, what directx version listed?

    Hi lovesleo,
My suggestion is to roll the update back.

Was this an MS update? If it was, bad idea to use MS driver updates - better to use ATI's if needed at all.

    Hi lovesleo,
Use System Restore and restore to the last restore point prior the update.

Type system restore into the start button search area and you'll be taken thrugh a series of dialogs on how to.

82945G might be incorrect, unless you have read it from the machine's (motherboard's) specifications.
If you have not done so, find the manual/User Guide for the motherboard/computer, it should(?) tell you the chipset model.

Windows Updates appears to be confused about the model of graphics that is installed. You may get confused yourself unless you identify the hardware correctly. You talk about diagnostic tools, they tend to be linked with OEM (branded) computers. If you have "upgraded" to Vista, find Vista drivers at the OEM manufacturer's website. Intel have a software utility to identify the chipset, but it does not work for OEM computers.

When Vista is installed, basic drivers that will run the hardware are installed. You need to run the drivers disk that came with the computer OR if the disk does not have Vista drivers, go to the hardware manufacturer's website and find them (that might be Dell, HP, Gateway, etc). Edit: if you have used a retail version of Windows on an OEM computer, you may not be able to get the correct drivers unless you purchase an upgrade version from the OEM manufacturer.

The correct chipset drivers need to be installed before other drivers.

    Hello lovesleo,

Video cards are covered by the warranty. Contact HP customer service and complain.

I hope your level of "intermediate" is fairly accurate :), it could be bumped a notch by the time you are finished  :)

I would envision you have two paths. Totally removing the drivers and software for the graphics, because they are stuck/jammed, or using the HP "recovery" system and starting from scratch.

The first path may be a long one...of installing, uninstalling and trying again. You may end up using the recovery disks anyway :(

Backing up your data and doing the "recovery" may be far less painful, but you will not learn anywhere near as much about how your computer works.

Back in Win 98 (or was it 95?) when I did my first...and last...update of drivers through Windows Update and my graphics drivers were in a similar situation, I ended up resorting to reinstalling Windows.

As I said, investigate your chipset drivers first. These may be an (Intel) "INF update" at the HP website.

The original graphics drivers should be on a disk included with the computer.

Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features to find an uninstall for both the drivers and the software for the graphics...and I would consider running the uninstall in Safe Mode. Use the drivers disk that came with the computer(?) to install the original drivers.

That's in a nutshell. This is where you need to investigate fully or "pull the plug" and reinstall Windows.

mmmm... a bad graphics adapter? Odds are in the Gazillions from your description. It's their graphics adapter anyway (under warranty).
