I am unable to create an Emergency Repair Disk on my Windows2000 Pro (sp2 and sp3) system.

In Backup I select to create the ERD, I insert a blank floppy and receive an error dialogue:

    "The operation failed.

The disk file was not found or was inaccesible. "

This occurs with any blank floppy disk and regardless of whether I
check "Also backup the registry... "

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Does your floppy drive otherwise function properly?

Are there any entries in the event logs? If so, give details.

If not, try running from the cmd window
    chkdsk /r

and then trying the erd creation again.

Arre you missing any files from winnt\repair (like setup.log)?

    autoexec.nt
    config.nt
    default
    sam
    secsetup.inf
    security
    setup.log
    software
    system

    Hi,

First level of problem resolution done - it's the missing setup.log file.

Now comes the hard part: How does one recreate setup.log?

I see some default contents floating around in the net, but how does one recreate the REAL contents?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Unless you have an identical system to copy the file(s) from (by far the easiest), you have a couple of options.

There are some "generic" versions available. Here is the recommendation from M$. Q175960

There is also a M$ "HOW TO" article for recovery from this situation. It is written for NT4 (and 3.51) with no 2K version that I can find but the NT4 one looks to me like it could work.

    Q173384.
