    HI all,

I have two things which exhibit hte same symptoms.

    first is the quicklaunch toolbar.
In this place i have some folders that have shortcuts to network shares.

If i try to click on anything in the bar it lags for 20 odd secs. if i try again within 30secs it doesnt lag, but i f a try again after 30secs it lags again.

    assumption: caching problems?

2nd is the file shares themself.

same deal, on first access itsa lag of 20secs and thereafter its fine as long as the period of inactivity isnt longer than 20sec.

im running win2k, this also happned on xp too.

What protocols are you running in the properties on My Network Places? I've seen this happen when more then TCP/IP is installed. On a MS network all you need is TCP/IP. Remove any other protocols if you don't need them.

    more info...

    protocols installed:
properties of the 'accton en1207d-TX PCI fast ethernet adapter'
    + client of MS networks
    + FILE & printer sharing
    + tcp/ip

advanced props of the card configure button show :
    + link speed/duplex mode : auto ( can have 10 halfmode, 100 halfmode,10 fullmode, 100 fullmode)
+ network address : not set.

    More symptom description:

The buttons stay pressed, and i cant use anything else until some wacky windows filesystem finishes its voodoo dance and returns to psuedo-multitasking abilites.

This includes the use of "show desktop" or anything on that bar...desktop icons dont react this way, unless i choose to see hte porperties of them.

Also, if i were to be asked to save something somewhere, usually the 'save as' dialouge box is pointing at 'my computer', so that means it has to show me me mapped(mounted) drives, the removable drices, etc, etc...this causes the lack of responsiveness too...cant do ANYTHING unitl this **** stops...usually about 20secs.

pressing windows-E......im typing this after i pressed it...it still hsnt come up..oh there it is...20secs later.

now when i reboot into ubuntu gutsy with my compiz desktop...i dont get any of these problems...the file system is super fast, network transfers hit 8-9mb/s and graphics render sublime.

but in windows...i get bottlenecks everywhere...in the UI, in the peformance, in the provision of software...everywhere.

edit: ive just tried to drag the explorer window from the first monitor(where it decided to popup(regardless of the fact that i pressed win+E whilst mouse was in focus on the second monitor)....and i could not drag it for another 5-10secs.

I expect the problem is name resolution. Do you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled?

Also what is providing your DHCP service - router, linux box or windows server?

    Dont use dhcp

    I dont use DHCP.

my computer connects to a switch then it touches the linux server.

I would agree with you reggie, but....winamp (one of the icons that lives on the quicklauncher) doesnt exist anywhere bu on my local computer..

Yet when i try to launch it, the act of pressing the icon, causes it to stay in the down animation. it is quite sometime before it animates up again.

but if i where to put this icon on the desktop, i would never get any such delay.

OK - let's go down another router.

One of the biggest problem I see with delays opening thing are links in the same area that are either pointing to something that is very big or more often something that is not there any more.

Have you a short-cut in your quick launch folder that is pointing at something that no longer exists or is switched off. You can right click on the quick launch bar and select "Open folder" to view all the items in that folder.

The problem is that sometimes Windows tries to be too clever. It tries to predict where you will go next and searches ahead of you ready for your next action. So if you open a folder, windows will search ahead in all the sub-folders so that when you click on one of them, it has already loaded them into memory and can therefore open them very quickly.

This works fine if all the destinations where windows is searching ahead actually exist and respond quickly. However, if one of them is to a resource that is not responding, Windows will effectively hang until it times out. So opening the root folder is delayed because Windows is waiting for a sub-item to respond.

So go through you quick launch folder and clear out any junk. also make sure there are not any large zip files in there (another thing that slows search ahead).

If that doesn't clear the problem. try a similar process on you directory root (usually c:\) and system root. Make sure you don't have any large zip files there or links to old systems that are no longer used. Windows explorer tends to search these locations too before serving up the item you requested, so having something like a large zip file there can slow everything down.
