I have a linksys wireless router and wanted to use it on our downstairs computer, to connect, wireless, to my desktop upstairs. I tried many combos and tricks and could not make reliable contact. I was told it was probably the house construction with metal lath in the wall to hold the plaster.

I gave up trying and installed a pair of powerline adapters from the router and it works flawlessly.

However, I don't get a wireless signal for my laptop. Where have I gone wrong. Do I need some additional connection from the wireless router.

Do you mean, you have a wireless router downstairs and are using network over powerline kit to provide a connection upstairs, and you want to also provide wireless upstairs? If so you'll probably need to install a wireless access point upstairs at the other end of the powerline connection.

    powerline adapter ----- wireless router

Or do you mean that the wireless connection isn't working downstairs with the laptop next to the router?

I guess I wasn't clear. I want to be able to get the wireless signal with the laptop at a different room downstairs. Doesn't the wireless router send a wireless signal as well as the powerline signal?. And shouldn't that wireless signal be picked up by a wireless adapter in the laptop?

Yes, the router should be able to send out a wireless signal at the same time that it handles connection over a cable.

Can your laptop get a wireless signal in the same room as the router?

it depends how you set up the network and / or if you installed or tried to install the powerline adapter on your laptop

    sequence should be
wireless router as first item attached to the isp modem
the powerline adapter that is the sending unit attached to a network cable from one of the four lan ports of the router
Should be all the same from there
I had installed the software for a powerline adapter ( belkin) on a laptop just for test purposes
Afterwards the laptop networking would not work with the wireless
I remember having a rather difficult time restoring the wireless ability
After that check the router setup just to be sure
At the worst reset the router and set it up from scratch
