A little while ago both my Wife and I notice that when we typed onto the keyboard that sometimes the letter and/or symbols and/or strings of letters failed to show up on the computer screen? I mentioned that it is also seen by my wife "as I have been know to type gibberish with my arthritic fingers and wrists" so the problem shows up for others as well as myself.

When I use the Microsoft on-screen keyboard and mouse there are no problems, but it takes forever to type anything of any length.

I acquired another keyboard and plugged it into the computer. It seemed fine ,but now the problem is back and is as bad as the original problem.

    Any ideas anyone? Thanks loonychoons

    Hi lc,
Something that will stop new hardware being installed (or reverting to a non-working situation in your case) is "helper" software. Look through the list of software in Add or Remove Programs (Control Panel) for programs that may relate to the keyboard. For laptop computers, this may also include things like touchpad or rollerball software. Logictech has this type of helper software and if it is the compaq computer in your signature, software has probably been installed for the hardware that was supplied with the computer. Uninstall any keyboard related software, but if it relates to the hardware and you think you will still need it, you can try reinstalling it or looking for updated versions at the manufacturer's website.

After you uninstall any software you may need to go to Device Manager, uninstall the keyboard (and related hardware if they seem to be affected) and reboot.

    Thanks Mattman.

Thanks for the info, but in my case all that I needed to do was to tweak the keyboard timing on the control panel? I think that maybe someone using our computer while we were in Scotland did not like the settings? Thanks Again loonychoons

P.S. I hope that you enjoy your Spring and then Summer season there "Down under" We here in Northern Ontario Canada will be looking forward to minus 40 degrees " on both thermometers" and Yard or meters of snow.

No you didn't make any mistakes, something like that very hard to judge. I only meant that you may not find a flood of responses here in Hardware. I could only think of some sort of software problem and you have pinpointed the settings, and I must say, well done! It appears that the settings have caused quite strange results, you might expect that settings will change things, but not stop them working.

For hardware people, we can be "let off the hook" if the cause turns out to be a software problem. I am just trying to be let off the hook because I would not expect settings to be the cause :D .

In your situation I would be inclined to assume it was a hardware problem as well. Good work isolating it :) .

And...as far as all your thank yous go, you are very welcome, BUT you solved the problem :p. (I hope my suggestion was helpful, it was all I could think of :) )

    Mattman.

Matt: The keyboard did not quit completely, what would happen was just a few missing letters and/or missing strings of two or three missing letters in a row. On what I had just typed. P.S. I can not look at the screen when I type, like my wife does I need to watch the Keyboard. Therefore it took awhile for me to notice any problem, and I happened to be watching her type a E-mail letter. What she was typing did not always show up on the monitor screen, but she knew that right away.

I compared it to my TV remote control I channel search way more often that anyone should, therefore over a few years I will ware out a couple of whose remotes. I know when I need a new one when the buttons stop responding and/or I am forced to push the same one over and over again.

Now here is the real reason that am writing to you, Do you persons Down-under use the Metric system or are you using the Imperial Measurement system? We have big issues her as we Canucks officially use metric, But live beside the U.S.A. and they did not adapt the Metric. " "" CONFUSING IS AN UNDER STATEMENT." " "

We changed to Metric about 30 odd years ago (in my teens). I still tend to prefer Inches to Centimetres because I could judge an Inch quite accurately. The other conversions I don't seem to have much problem with. Yes, without a conversion chart handy, you need to remember the rules of both. Even a conversion chart may not list the one you want.
I notice that a lot of the US people on the forum do speak in terms of Metric or offer a conversion, so that makes it quite a bit easier for both sides. When we used Imperial, over here we would, say, record a person's weight in Stones and Pounds, US prefer Pounds, so I was a little confused even back then.

The European people may be having similar problems converting from their native currency to Euros (and other countries like ours might need to look at a conversion to either or both).

I suppose it is one of the teething problems of becoming a "global community" (understatement? :D ).
