    Hello bernyx,

Are you running any sort of Download Acceleration software? If so, disable it.

If you haven't done so, try disabling any IE Add-ons. IE's Tools > Manage Add-ons and disable the BHO's. If that solves the problem, re enable one by one.

What connection type do you have?

I don't think I have any download accel software. Does BHO mean browser helper object? There is one, SSVhelper class.
    I have a cable connection

    Hi bernyx,
    Yes it does.

SSVHelper is a portion of the Java Plugin and has been known to degrade performance. Disable it and see if that helps.

Another cause may be the limit on the max # of simultaneous connections that can be opened from one site. Increasing that improves performance. IE's default is two.

Should have asked before, which version of IE are you running? 6 or 7.

Also, I'm not sure if it's exactly an explorer problem, I have the same problem if using mozilla. If I use mozilla, a window opens and says "starting" but just sits there. Do you think it's a windows problem?

Could be, but more probable that it's the firewall - ZA itself.

Are you trying to upgrade ZA? Is it the stanalone free or Pro version? If so, a better way is to download the upgrade file to your hard drive, disconnect from the internet, run the upgrade from the hard drive. Or is this the ZA Suite and your trying to update a part of the suite? The AV or anti spyware portion?

In any case, to try to pin this down:

Disconnect from the internet > shut ZA down > go into XP's Security Center via the Control Panel > enable XP's firewall > reconnect to the internet and see if it's ZA causing this.

All this assumes that you have trouble downloading for other applications as well. If it's only ZA you're having problems with, let us know. After rereading your first post, I'm not clear on that. You did write "eg" so I assumed it's more than ZA updates that are the problem.

I just have the stand alone free. I don't think it's only ZA. For example, using google updater, I tried to update picassa, and it just keeps saying
    "updating" but never finishes

Ok, then disable ZA and use XP's firewall and lets see if the problem is ZA.

    Hi bernyx,

Lets see if dss reveals anything. Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
    • When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.
Post the contents of both logs.

Do you still have HijackThis? The following entry needs fixed.

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - - (no file)

Try powering down your modem and router (if using a router). Double check router settings in the router control panel.

I tried powering down the modem, that didn't help. I don't have a router.

No need to post a log, just fix that entry.

Open Network Connections and right click>Properties on the Local Area Connection. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list then click Properties. Verify that both IP and DNS server addresses are set to be obtained automatically. Click the Advanced button and verify that it shows DHCP Enabled on the IP Settings tab, IP Addresses section. OK your way out.

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Type the following commands and hit enter after each.

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /renew

Let us know if there is any difference.
