I have been receiving this stop error constantly and getting the same minidump. No new hardware installed. Can anyone help me solve this mystery? Here is the data from the memory dump file:

    NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS (35)
A higher level driver has attempted to call a lower level driver through
the IoCallDriver() interface, but there are no more stack locations in the
packet, hence, the lower level driver would not be able to access its
parameters, as there are no parameters for it. This is a disasterous
situation, since the higher level driver "thinks" it has filled in the
parameters for the lower level driver (something it MUST do before it calls
it), but since there is no stack location for the latter driver, the former
has written off of the end of the packet. This means that some other memory
has probably been trashed at this point.

Appears to point to this problem and possible solution. Do you have that software running?

    Constant BSOD IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR

Thanks for checking this out. I'm on an XP Pro machine and though I may have had Easy or Direct CD, I don't find that software now. I use Nero for CD functions. I did notice the file mentioned in the debug, ASPI32.sys, and found the same on my computer and listed in the device manager under hidden haedware. I disabled it but got the same stop order. I also updated this driver with drivers from Toshiba but to no avail.

I'm still searching. The stop is an 0Xa and the last part is 0X804E469A - it's always the same one. I've been through all my drivers and hardware to no solution.

    XP is essentially the same.

Would unhide everything in explorer.exe (click tools > folder options, and uncheck all statements re:hiding files/lfolders, including system - which will cause XP to complain, but insist, and uncheck hide extentions).

Then check for all the files mentioned (Aspi32.sys, Cdr4vsd.sys, Cdudf.sys and Cdrpwd.sys) and rename them to .old as directed by MS.

Reboot, and if you continue to get the unwanted message, would continue with 'method 2' in the article.

I believe this is safe because, as you say, the computer is not running the software that uses these files.

    Constant BSOD IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR EQUAL

Well Sparrow, I tried what we were talking about and it had no effect on the stop error - it's still there. Now the computer fails to make a minidump or memory dump file after the error stop. The page file, etc is set correctly as well as the the proper commands. I've tried to get them back to no avail. All hardware and drivers have been checked, etc. Do you think ugdating the BIOS will make any difference? I also can't find any loose boards or cable.

    This is driving me crazy!

Have you mentioned the number of the stop error, e.g., 0X0000000A? I may have missed it. This article describes a way to get help from MS. That's worth a try, since I don't believe they charge for sending them a report. At present no one here is an expert in reading dumps, but I was hoping we might be lucky. I may be able to do some more research wirh the error number.

Sparrow, thanks! I will proceed to the article you gave me. And yes, that is the stop error.

Have you updated any device drivers or installed any Windows Updates recently? If so, which ones?

I had to reinstall Windows XP in August after I goofed-up trouble shooting the BSOD and after the install it was still there. I recently put SP2 back in but the BSOD was there before I did this and after it. I did have significant trouble getting SP2 to run but I attributed that to the windows installer that was affected by the XP redo. All my drivers are up to date and most have been rolled back and then updated again. No new hardware has been installed. All hardware has been physically disconnected and then reconnected and found and functioned by XP. I use an external hard drive for storage that is on the network via cable to the main computer and functions as a separate drive for two computers including the one with the BSOD. The other communicates wirelessly. Windows updates are downloaded and installed periodically automatically. I wonder sometimes if it it failing hardware but everything works fine and in fact runs faily smoothly for an eight year old Dell. THe BSOD is ever present at shutdown so depending what I'm doing I have to go back and forth changing the restart at shutdown feature. This computer was on and unattended from January to July of this year but operated remotely most days. Since the failure setting was set to restart at failure any time it was shutdown either remotely or by itself the BSOD was never seen. Once it was shutdown with someone present and then it didn't turn off the failure restart feature was disabled and the BSOD discovered so who knows how long this has been goin on. It's driving me crazy.

    Thanks for taking a look.

And it's consistently the same BSOD, correct? This one in particular, along with your dump file, points directly to your sound drivers.

It also appears that you are using the default MS Creative Labs driver. You should upgrade the the vendor specific one.

    Sorry for the double post...

...was this machine upgraded from Windows 98 or ME? A few of those driver files are outdated for Windows XP.

Nilpo, good for you. There is hope. I can easily get the MS Creative drivers.
Indeed, this machine was upgraded from Windows 98 right after XP came on line. I purchased it with 98 in it with Dell's promise to upgrade for me which they did. So, I've been using upgrade CDs. I ran the drivers through Dirver Agent and installed any drivers they recommended. I'll go look for the right creative drivers tonight and install them. I'm doing the troubleshooting via remote right night as I won't be at the PC until next week but my assistant can access it anytime. Would any more information be useful to you. The Sandra program is installed on the computer.

Yes. Enter msinfo32 in the Run... prompt. This will generate information about your current configuration. You can choose to export from the File menu. Please post the text file here.

ASPI layer drivers were required Win 98. Win XP does not have ASPI drivers installed, but some software installs them.

If it only relates to ASPI, here is some information specifically for Win XP:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182542/en-us

Here is the download that is referenced:
    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v471_exe.htm
Nero uses a different set of drivers to adaptec.

    Lots of information here:
    http://aspi.radified.com/
I have had success using Force ASPI, but after running the software/installation I found I needed to uninstall the optical drives in Device Manager and reboot before they worked correctly again.

Recent versions of Nero do not need to install ASPI layer drivers in Win XP.

Nilpo and Matt (thank you Matt for your interest):

I installed the new Ceative Sound Blaster drivers per Nilpo's suggestion and reference. They indicated a successful installation. I then checked my system hardware and found the sound ok but my CD Rom and DVD hardware malfunctioning (yellow circle !). I uninstalled both and re-installed but they continue to indicate problems.

Per Matt's instruction and reference I checked my aspi layer and found:
    aspi32.exe to be 4.71
    wowpost.exe to be 4.6
    winaspi.dll to be 4.6
    wnaspi32.dll to be 4.71

I was troubled by the separate versions so I atempted to install the latest adaptec update for these drivers 4.7.2. The drivers faild to upgrade.

I then installed the old 4.6 drivers reported to be fine and stable (C:\Adaptec/aspi/aspiinst.exe X32 debug force). They installed successfully.

Unfortunately, the BSOD 0XA 0X804E469A, my old and costant enemy showed up and the CD R)M and DVD hardware shows a problem still.

Memory.dmp is available from this last go round and sorry for the long reply.

In device manager, remove your Audio and CD devices.

Then reboot and reinstall those drivers after the restart.

You should also reboot between adding drivers. It may be having problems overwriting files that are in use.

    'Constant BSOD IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR EQUAL

Well Nilpo, I did as you suggested to no avail with the CD ROM and DVD. The audio seems to be working fine with it's updated driver but the BSOD is still there on shutdown. I'm not sure what the aspi layer is for or what uses it but I re-installed this driver package again. I did see this file type (apsi) in the memory dump that I don't know how to read.

I'm at my wits end with this problem. I can't really checkout physically the cd/dvd hardware because I can't sit down at this computer and am doing all this remotely until next Friday. I'm sure they aren't functioning. I thought about updating their drives but you have to use floppies. Hard to do when you are in FL and the computer is in DC.

ASPI, I can only relate my experiences and those were mainly in Win 98. I had some knock-down, drag-out battles with ASPI, one resulting in a reformat, the last was when I used Force ASPI (backup, Kill ASPI, install new drivers). Now I avoid using older versions of Nero and other programs that install ASPI (I do not install InCD if I can avoid it). As you can see by information at the Radified webpage, it is not clear-cut.

It would be best if ASPI drivers were not required to be installed. If your version of Nero is older than version 6, you may keep getting problems.

Nero has uninstall utilities in the downloads at their website. I would uninstall Nero. To make it the best possible uninstall, I would boot into Safe Mode and carry it out there. I would go to Device Manager and uninstall the optical drives (BUT, since ASPI also controls any SCSI drives, I would look for any SCSI controllers/devices as well). The IDE controllers can be uninstalled. After that, I would even consider shutting down, disconnecting the optical drives (and SCSI devices), booting into Windows and checking that everything was OK in Device Manager, then shutting down and reconnecting the devices.
You can probably see some of the techniques I have used in the past

Frankly Wadezoe, Win 98 -> Win XP upgrades are not completely stable. We tend to offer what suggestions we can, but a reformat is suggested when ideas run dry. If it still has 98 in the "background ", you can reformat and install XP from the upgrade disk and only need to show that you own the Win 98 disk. After you installed Nero, if the ASPI files were back, I would uninstall it and look for another, updated burning program.

    Matt
