...always runs on startup. I've disabled the service in "computer management | services" and it still pops up an info box when I start my machine. Currently running Norton AV 2008, Spybot and Adaware which seem to signify no threats.

Also have an occasional instance of "dllhost.exe" running which quits on a reboot. The file is of the correct size and location. Any ideas?

    TIA!

    Hi Russ,

You need to identify what application is starting the installer. It's generally caused by something failing to install completely. Does it identify a program? Ask for a disk or file? You should find something in the event logs that gives some clues as well. Look for MSI Installer errors/events. Usually can be solved by uninstalling/re-installing the application.

I've searched the registry for the ProgID and it only turns up 3 instances, all in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache ". Past this, I have no idea what's happening...

    Thanks!

I believe the 1001 errors are related to Microsoft Office. Did you recently install, uninstall, upgrade or repair any Office components? Running each of the Microsoft office components 1 time might fix the MSI Installer error, as it will update the registry information.

From what I can find, the 1015 error generally occurs when the Windows Management Instrumentation service is disabled. Click Start>Run and type services.msc then hit Enter to open the Services console. Check that the WMI service is started and set to Automatic.

I have an old installation of OfficeXP, but haven't changed anything (intentionally) since it's initial install. I went through control panel and did a "repair" to my installation and it didn't give any errors.

My "services" panel shows three different WMI services:
    • Windows Management Instrumentation (started - automatic)
    • Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions (not running - manual)
    • WMI Performance Adaptor (not running - manual)

    Is this correct?

    Thanks!

WMI services settings and state appear to be in order. You wouldn't have gotten any errors doing a repair of Office, even if there were indeed components in need of repair. Have you gotten any prompts from Windows Installer since doing the Office repair?

Well, that didn't work... On next reboot, goetting the same:

I waited 30 seconds or so, then hit cancel. Guess I'll write a script to toggle the installer service from auto to disabled.

    Thanks anyways for the suggestions!

Hi Raselkirk. Since you did a repair of Microsoft Office and you are still getting the Windows installer prompt on startup, you should run the windows installer cleanup utility. http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html ;) After you download and install the program, run it and then choose Microsoft office to remove the windows installer entry. Let me know if you were able to solve your problem. :)

Evan, funny you should mention that utility, I've had it for several months without occasion to use it until today. I tried to remove references to a Norton diagnostic (SymADataWeb.msi) with it, which it failed to do. I eventually searched it out in the registry and watched that key while running the tool. Finally ended up deleting the key manually. I don't have much faith in this "Clean Up" tool, however, I may try deleting the "Office" key and see if that stops my installer from running...

BTW, the script is working great. Double-clicking the icon will toggle the MSIServer service to on or off, I just have to remember to start it before installing anything. I also wrote the same script for AOL's "WANMiniportService" which stays running after AOL is terminated.
