I bought a Dell XPS laptop, used. The drive appears to be functioning normally, but under device manager, there is a yellow ball with the black exclamation mark.
It is listed as a SonyDVD+RW DW-R56A. Under properties, general tab, it states that "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device(Code 41) Click troubleshoot...
On the drive itself are two labels. On the large on it says Dell P/N 7W036-A01.
On the little white label with the barcodes, it says DP/N 0U5015 and
CN - 0U5015-55081-49R-80VR Made in China.
I googled around and found my way to Dell's forum, where some say it is a NEC drive, either a 5100 or one that has been flashed to Model 6500. Not sure I understand all I read there. I tried Dell support, but since this laptop is long out of warranty, they want money. The OS is Win XP Home with all of the latest updates.
Using the service tag at support.dell.com, I get several options to download firmware and other software for an assortment of DVD drives, including several Sony and NECs. I'm hoping that updating the firmaware and whatever other software is available for this drive will get rid of the yellow ball.

You are right, Steve. I uninstalled the drive from within the hardware manager, rebooted the laptop, and windows found it as the Sony drive-this time without the yellow ball or any problems listed in the properties section.
Discussions on other bulletin boards led me to believe that it was possibly an NEC, and I didn't want to download an update driver, and then update a Sony drive with NEC drivers or vice versa.
Thanks for your reply. This board, and folks like you are the best. I always brag about you folks to my coworkers.

    Glad you got it sorted...

Dell does use drives from different makers...So maybe someone with an NEC drive was confused...
