I am being forced to use Internet Explorer because so far other browsers slow my system down so much especially when scrolling and changing forum pages. I had used Firefox for a long while but it become so slow I started looking at others such as Opera and I now have Netscape and neither are acceptable. I have no complaints with IE but most say it is not as safe as the others that is my only reason to think about changing browsers. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks

I, never, use, intentionally, IE. As for the other browsers, I have seen that Firefox and Netscape (whatever) load slowly, but it is a function of my having a ton of add-ons (extentions) and Tabs. Of course, I keep Cache very low (unnecessary with broadband), and have it deleted on exit. Cookies, a necessary evil, must be kept indefinitely. But, except for loading the programs, they render pages as well. Opera may be a bit faster.
But, one has to compare apples with apples, and looking at the same page, I cannot tell, the action of loading new pages of, any browser apart.

Thanks Westside for your reply, I do not have the excuse of extensions and I do keep my computer clean, the problem most troubling is a jerking while scrolling with the arrow but the scroll bar is fine, it plays tricks on your eyes so I will continue using IE until I find a better solution.

Again Thanks

Sophie,
do you have dial-up? I have Cable, and not the fastest choice. I will check to see if there is any explanation to your woes. It is bothersome since all browsers, but IE, are affected.

No, I have DSL but with the slow browsers I felt like I was still using dial up.

After changing back to IE I have a very fast machine again.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Sophie
does "arrow" mean the cursor keys on your keyboard, pls?

Also (to help confirm) do you still have the problem with a web page which has already fully loaded (and is "taller" than the height of your screen)

If I'm reading your posts correctly, I suspect the trouble isn't to do with the internet or the speed of your connection etc., but that we're more in the realms of keyboard auto-repeat settings, Windows' settings for scrolling, and browser prefs for scrolling

best wishes, HJ.

Thanks HJ for your reply,
The arrows I am refering to are the arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar to the right of the screen. Yes I do have the problem on pages already loaded mostly (Forums) and the pages are to wide for my screen and the screen is always over to far to the left of screen causing me to have to scroll before I can view the post. I have set the scrolling setting as advised removing the smooth scrolling option in Windows. I am not aware of the keyboard auto-repeat settings or the browser prefs for scrolling.
Also I have just purchased a new Logitech mouse but nothing changed. I am almost convinced it is the Forum (MyPcClinic) I visit frequently I know they are having some problems at this time....

Sophie -

thanks for pointing out  (ouch) which arrows you meant - ahh, the arrows on the scrollbar which I haven't really used a lot since getting a mouse with a wheel ;)

browser prefs for smooth scroll:
Firefox, put about:config into the address bar, than enter smooth as the filter; the option "general.smoothScroll" seems set off by default, perhaps try toggling it on & see what you get? (using the word scroll as the filter finds a couple more settings as well)

Opera's smooth scroll setting lurks under Tools>Preferences but is hidden differently in various versions Opera9 / Opera7

there seem to be some downloadable add-on(s) available to "enhance" Firefox scrolling performance. I haven't tried any such, FF works fine for me with the wheel on the mouse

(if I really whizz the wheel to whang it up half a page or so, FF scrolls smoothly but pretty fast, in one motion. Trying with the arrowheads at the vertical scrollbar ends as you say is quite "untidy" though  - slowing this down further might smooth it out, but would compromise the action with the wheel)

I visited the forum site you mentioned - after getting distracted by the poll (stunning stuff) I tried out their skins (eek! BBS software in skins) and this showed up something interesting:

I tried the various skins with IE6, Opera9, and Firefox 2.0.0.9; with IE and with Opera the non-fixed width skins MPC vbulletin3 and Mike's Eye Candy work OK down to a much smaller screen width (before you need a horizontal scrollbar), than is needed by their fixed layout width couterparts vb3 Style Fixed and Eye Candy Fixed

However when using Firefox this doesn't seem to happen - the "non-fixed" skins required as much width as their fixed counterparts.

results using: http://www.mypcclinic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17927
measured min window width before scrollbar appears (vb3 / vb3 fixed):

opera 511px / 772px
ie 560px / 798px
ff 785px / 785px

Opera and Eye Candy Fixed was the pairing which works down to the smallest screen width (474px) before needing a scrollbar.

I do understand the annoyance of forever having to scroll sideways to see the content! Particularly aggravating when there's a navigation sidebar (which you don't need) taking up the "best" bit of the page width :(

pressing the middle button of the mouse gives me (yet) another kind of "scrolling arrow " (the round thing in the middle), once I used to think this was just a gimmick - nowadays have to admit that I find myself using it quite regularly for large web pages - and large pdf's :p FWIW, seems to work fine with Firefox

best wishes, HJ
